How can you avoid interruptions and distractions during a public speaking engagement?

When I deliver a public address I spend time to know 2 things - - who is the audience ? - how can I add value to them? Knowing the audience provides insights into who are they, what do they know, what can be their expectation, what time would they prefer. Adding value to the listeners through my knowledge & experience is my attempt- I try to add personal anecdotes to make it engaging.

Don't rely on body language signals from the audience to validate whether or not your messages are landing. People process differently. The person on the laptop may be taking the best notes in the room. Expecting others to close laptops and not thoughtfully or laugh at our wit is a form of self-distraction often tied to a lack of self-confidence. Have material you believe in, believe in it, and trust the universe. Every actor does. They can't see the audience at all on the other side of the lights. Aspire to that. It's about your material. Not about you. Be present with it, and all will sort itself out.

-Review your content to be relevant, related, time-bound from the audience POV and it must have "value" to offer. -Set expectations for the audience at the start, notify of spaces in between for Q&A and request for minimal interruptions. -Practice your speech thoroughly to build confidence and fluidity. -Engage the audience through interactive elements, limiting monologues. Use visual aids strategically to maintain focus. -Establish non-verbal cues for handling interruptions politely and redirecting the conversation. -Maintain eye contact and assertive body language to command attention. -Embrace pauses for emphasis and regain control if disruptions arise, ensuring a seamless and uninterrupted flow during the public speaking engagement.

As a thought leader, one of the principal points on your to do list is to get crystal clear on your audience. Who are you talking to? Who do you serve? What are their pain points? What do they need to hear? What can you say that will dramatically benefit them? How can you tailor your message in a way that will resonate with them? How can you adjust your tone and delivery in a way that will be the most impactful? As you answer these questions, you’ll gain immense clarity. This will impact your delivery and the overall power behind your messaging. It is also of the utmost importance to be cognizant of context. Are you in a corporate setting, an academic setting, or an informal venue? This will naturally impact your delivery and messaging.

Before you design and deliver your presentation, delve into understanding your audience – who they are, what they expect, and what matters to them. Tailoring your message, tone, and style to align with their needs, interests, and preferences enhances engagement. Anticipate and address potential questions, objections, or concerns to demonstrate thorough preparation. Knowing your audience not only builds rapport, trust, and credibility but also ensures you steer clear of anything that might offend, bore, or confuse them. This personalized approach creates a more meaningful connection, making your presentation more impactful and resonant with your audience.

When creating a speech or a presentation I tend to work backwards. I define the purpose of my talk and craft a memorable ending. The last words the audience hears are often the only words they remember. Next I create the hook, the opening of my speech. I believe you have to grab their attention and create some credibility and likability right from the start. I write the body of the speech filled with ups and downs in order to keep my audience interested and intreuged and finally I work on the transitions between parts to establish a flow. There are many other components to consider, but these are the guts of it.

One way to ensure fewer disruptions is to captivate your audience from the start. Begin with a compelling narrative and deploy a hook (I prefer a controversial question), then tell the audience how you will lead them on a journey. If you suspect the audience might get distracted, inform them that there will be time for questions, discussions with peers at a roundtable later, or we can shift the dialogue to social media.

Planning and preparation are absolutely key as you craft compelling presentations to solidify your status as an able speaker and thought leader. The amount of time, effort, and preparation that you invest in creating your presentation will show on the day of delivery. Your audience will certainly recognize your effort in putting together a well thought out piece of content. It’s also important to be mindful of the fact that people now have increasingly short attention spans. Your presentation needs to be well-timed, it has to include breaks, and periodic interactions from your audience. You want to keep them engaged as you relay your valuable knowledge.

During my years on the speaking circuit, my practice was to write out my talk and then reduce it to an outline consisting of the main points and sub-points. I would then commit the outline to memory. That got me away from having to refer to notes, be more extemporaneous, and make a stronger connection to the audience. I also practiced the presentation to ensure I stayed within the allotted timeline.

When you practice enough, it will allow you to handle interruptions with ease. You can always go back to your presentation naturally because you know your stuff. It’s ingrained in your mind and it became part of you.

Practice makes perfect, especially in the realm of public speaking. Regularly rehearsing your delivery enhances confidence, fluency, and clarity. Through practice, you can identify and rectify any errors, gaps, or weaknesses in your content, language, or style. Utilize various methods such as rehearsing in front of a mirror, recording yourself, or seeking feedback from a friend. External perspectives can offer valuable insights to refine your presentation further. Additionally, by simulating different scenarios during practice, you equip yourself to handle unexpected situations seamlessly, ensuring a polished and well-prepared performance when it's time to present to your audience.

This is essentially what it’s all about right here. Practicing your delivery is not just about delivering an average presentation, it’s about polishing your performance. Remember, regardless of how “dry” your topic might be, your audience is there to be informed AND entertained. How do you put together and deliver a compelling presentation? You practice, practice, and then practice some more. Practicing allows you to hone your craft as an orator. It shines through on presentation day. Practicing your delivery, and getting it down to the T, is the price we have to pay as international keynote speakers. It’s important to remember that we’re lucky to be able to do what we do. A responsibility that should not be taken lightly.

I have a background in music performance, where learning how to practice was paramount for any performance – the same applies to public speaking. To me, as a speaker, I should have all the slides memorized, not just the content, but also the order. I should be at a level of practice where I can predict the slide order both forward and backward. At that point, I'm able to weave in inflections, stories, a broader narrative, and body language. As a speaker, I want to focus on the non-verbal communication from the audience by locking eyes with them. They know I'm fixed on them; the story becomes secondary, and the message naturally flows from that connection.

How do you deliver a quality presentation? The same way you get to Carnegie Hall -- practice, practice, practice. That's the only way to ensure you approach the presentation with confidence, fluency, and clarity. Even better, practice in front of a mirror or record yourself. That way, you can iron out the wrinkles and polish the presentation. At the same time, don't over-practice. I've been guilty of that in the past and by the time it came to speak, I had drained all the life out of it.

Oh man, I've been in some challenging speaking venues. The trick is to check them out in advance and see what modifications can be made. Do a microphone and AV check, and be sure to test the slides. I've found that some clickers have a slight delay or limited range – an issue one has to compensate for. Also, ensure you don't get near speakers, which can cause a feedback loop. One lesson I learned the hard way is never to speak during a party or a meal; attention is extremely limited.

Some things may be out of your control (like external noise or construction). I used to work in a venue that had a very noisy AC system. During the summer, it would kick on a handful of times during my presentations. The first time it did this, many people would look up at the noise. I would stop my presentation and make sure everyone was focused on the noise. “That is the AC unit. It is loud when it turns on. This is the first time you heard that. It will happen three or four more times today. Now that you know what it is, I encourage you to ignore it the rest of the day.” Then I’d return to my talk and most of the time, no one would be distracted anymore. Side note: I do the same with youth sports when the kiddos are distracted.

One time I had created some slides for our director who was presenting at City Hall. It had gone through multiple rounds of review by different team members, managers, and the director himself. It should have been flawless but during the presentation there were shifted text and broken images. *sigh* Unfortunately the version of PowerPoint on the city hall computer was an older version. So the morale of the story is to always test the presentation on the actual device it will be running on ahead of time. Additionally, always bring a USB drive with a copy of the file plus a PDF version as well in case the presentation software isn’t compatible.

What might seem like interruptions or distractions can sometimes be opportunities to engage with your audience. The goal isn't for everyone to sit silently listening to every word you say. You might think about letting it be more of a conversation between you and the audience. Encourage questions, because they give you a chance to respond to specific issues audience members are most interested in. And even an unwanted interruption like a power outage or a fired drill can create a shared experience between you and the audience. Just try to roll with it and be open to connecting with the audience in unscripted scenarios.

I ascribe to the motto that if anything can go wrong it will and at the worst possible time. So, just as practicing your presentation is essential, so is ensuring that everything works -- the microphone, sound system, projector, computer, internet connection, and pointer - everything. That way, you'll be as well prepared if something goes wrong as you possibly could be. Another tip: Don't rely on having a strong internet connection. The chances are there's an entire room filled with people who have already grabbed every wifi connection possible. If I needed to use a video, I downloaded and embedded it into PowerPoint. If I needed to show a website, I used a screenshot of the home page. Better safe than sorry.

One of the ways I was taught to avoid distractions came from Mark Victor Hansen; if someone is getting up or causing a commotion on one side of the audience, physically walk to the OPPOSITE side of the stage; that way, people's eyes will follow you in that corner of the universe and away from the distaction.

This is crucial. How many times have you seen a speaker or thought leader lose their cool? This automatically disconnects you as a member of the audience and brings the speaker’s credibility in question. You need to say cool, calm, and collected. Electing to be a thought leader means that you have chosen a career in the public eye. And that comes with its fair share of responsibilities and ways of being. Chief among which is embodying the leadership trait of remaining composed when things go wrong. Being mentally prepared is half the battle, too. Understand that it’s not a question of if, but rather a question of when. Having well-prepared material on hand makes all the difference when things do go wrong.

As any interruption is an opportunity to explore an alternate angle, I coach my @GetUNstuckNOW Breakthrough coaching clients to harness this strategy, in the moment: Prompt to relate the interruption... directly to what was just presented. It might sound like: "... as we value your interest in X... do continue on that (what they just said), as related to this (what you presented). What happens next: If they do choose to continue (now with relevance), everyone can harness what serves best: their view, yours, or a combo of both views. Otherwise, offer them an opportunity to discuss it with you later, at a break.

An interruption is literally a 'rupture' in the speakers thought process or energetic flow. For me personally it's important to make it very clear from the outset that while you are interested in hearing what people have to say you need the ability to speak without interruption for your allotted time frame, stressing clearly that there will be plenty of time at the end of the session for comments, questions and feedback. And that you hope that people will respect your request. And then make sure there is the time for audience feedback at the end.

Oh, I've had interruptions during my speeches. Once backstage, someone dropped many plates, causing a huge ruckus. In this case, I addressed it head-on, as everyone was distracted. I quickly responded, 'The conference organizers told me to give a speech with a bang, but this is above and beyond.' Laughter ensued, and I used that energy to move forward. If I see hand-raisers, I say, 'I see you, and we'll take questions towards the end. You're up first!

When speaking in public for thought leadership, it is crucial to keep your message at the forefront. Your message serves as the guiding light that illuminates your presentation, encapsulating the essence of your ideas, insights, and expertise, and empowering you to deliver a compelling and impactful speech that resonates with your audience and solidifies your position as a thought leader in your field.

Public speaking doesn't mean you're a programmed robot, automatically fixed on delivering a memorized message. You're a person speaking with (not to) other people. Be flexible. I've had a number of entertainers/comedians in my family, all great on their feet, using interruptions to create a little magic. And, prospective clients will dig that you can be in the moment. Thinking fast is a real skill and they'll want it from you once you're hired.

Sometimes the distraction from your message unexpectedly arrives during a question and answer session at the end of the presentation. In order to ensure that the audience walks away with your key message top of mind, it helps to prepare your own final words to deliver after the Q&A.

You have to roll with the interuptions and ebb and flow of a presentation. These things are character building but can make you as a presenter. The audience and room control is that x factor. Especially memorable moments can be off script.

To ensure a focused and uninterrupted public speaking engagement, prioritizing prevention is key. The meeting facilitator should diligently prepare the audience, emphasizing certain guidelines. In-person events require a reminder to silence phones, prohibit calls, encourage respect for the speaker and fellow attendees, and defer discussions and questions to a designated time. In virtual settings, it is imperative to stress the importance of remaining muted unless specifically invited to speak.

If a distraction becomes significant or disruptive, don't hesitate to address it politely and/or with good humor. You can acknowledge the distraction, make a light-hearted comment, and then smoothly transition back to your message. Interruptions are a part of life.
