1 Know your objectives

Before you use a decision support tool, you should have a clear and specific idea of what you want to achieve with your decision. What are your criteria, constraints, preferences, and trade-offs? How will you measure your success and evaluate your alternatives? A decision support tool can help you structure your problem and compare options, but it cannot tell you what your goals are. You should define them yourself and communicate them to your stakeholders.

While what has been mentioned is important, when choosing or developing a decision support tool, knowing the objectives and requirements is not enough. We need to know the way to go the way. Having a clear process and decision flow drafted first is key. We can use this to build or check the functionalities of the tools to ensure the?criteria, constraints, and preferences can be mapped to deliver the objectives. It is equally important to assess the sustainability of the tool, to know how the tool will be supported, maintained and updated throughout its expected useful life.?

Decision support tools are as good as the skills and knowledge of the tool. Often, people go for popular tools without skills to optimize its use. Your objective should be futuristic and now just use of one aspect of the tool. Otherwise the tool is not adding value. Does the tool aligned to your strategic mission or is it a feel good to have for moving with the crowd. The tool should give metrics for measuring results

The tool should align with the strategic mission or goal in a wholistic way, and not fragmented according to the department where the tool resides. The tools should have room for expansion according to emerging needs e.g if it was initially for sending text, can it do images. The tool should provide have data and analysis for strategic review and improvement The tool should not be so technical that one is dependent on service provider. Invest in training or learning how to use the tool

Therefore, the user the tool should invest in analyzing the information vis a vis the organizational objectives and providing advisory role and not just conveyance of information
