Regularly assess relationships with community partners to identify any situations where personal, organizational, or financial interests could conflict with the community's well-being. Transparency is key in recognizing and addressing potential conflicts promptly.

Use the setbacks and lessons of the people who came before you as a roadmap to achieving your future goals and not wasting time duplicating mistakes. This is also a great way to examine solutions to conflict in the pass as a base line to finding a solution. The only way that you could totally fail is to fail to learn from your own lived experiences and fail to learn from your ancestors’experiences—good,bad,and indifferent—that you were blessed to encounter. When you do experience conflcit, rewind figure out what didn’t work, what did work, and what could have been done better. And proceed from a solution based mindset.

Sometimes there is no need to reinvent the wheel, learn from the past specially Mistakes and do not commit them again, learn from the past as we look to the future

Assess the power imbalance and powder dynamics at the start of the collaboration. Often these are not named or addressed and underline the future miscommunication, unclear expectations, and absence of trust. Once you identify the power imbalances or dynamics, brainstorm how to minimize those to best improve collaboration and partnership.

I think the point of reviewing them regularly to make sure they are still relevant is an area that gets overlooked in many organizations. I think that mostly happens because of capacity issues so it is equally important to make sure there is space and time to review these periodically. It can become part of the evaluation process which should be scheduled ahead of time as a periodic part of the process.

Clarity and seperation of duties, I think are the most critical. Without these, first the overall goal achievement gets under the risk, so by solidifying the duties with clarity keeps the purpose of the community still reachable and as a result keeps the community in action. When you have clarity and separation of duties, it becomes easier to team up around the areas where the most problem exists, it helps efficient team development and lower resolution time/cost.

Define and communicate specific roles and responsibilities for each party involved. Clarity in expectations helps mitigate potential conflicts and ensures everyone understands their contributions to the collaborative effort.

Establish a conflict resolution mechanism: Nonprofits should proactively establish a process or framework for resolving conflicts, including clear escalation pathways. By implementing a fair and transparent conflict resolution mechanism, organizations provide a safe space for partners to express concerns and find mutually beneficial solutions.

Have a conflict of interest policy. Short but clear that any direct financial benefit from activities is a conflict. When working in community this is tricky because so many relationships are in place to get the work done. Make sure these expectations are laid out at the beginning of any contract.

Every level of success or leadership comes with its own level of conflict that you are now responsible for as a leader. When I first started speaking and presenting on community organizing or advocacy, I found many of my mentees who were new to lead- ership often experienced new challenges in their new roles, as it related to their teams and community members. I learned through my own trial and error that you always have to deal with conflict if you want to advance in life, both in community organizing and professionally. And here’s the kicker: at the next level of leadership, there will be a whole new body of challenges and conflicts for you to solve.
