SNMPv1 is outdated due to its weak security measures and should be avoided!! The choice between SNMPv2c and SNMPv3 depends on your network's capabilities. If both your NMS and managed devices support SNMPv3, it's the clear winner for its strong authentication and encryption. However, if SNMPv3 isn't compatible, then SNMPv2c can be used with caution. To improve security with SNMPv2c, consider ACLs to restrict access and SNMP Views to limit the information exposed.

Nowadays, it's mandatory to watch over the privacy of data flow, so my suggestion is to use SNMP versions that support cryptography. Another good practice is to avoid using RW (read and write) communities that allow reconfiguring devices using SNMP. Implementing only RO (read-only) communities is sufficient for monitoring. This way, if cryptography is overwhelmed, only the privacy of the data will be impacted, but none of your devices can be misconfigured for hostile actions

One should configure limited SNMP traps, for critical events only. For rest of details syslog may be relied on. Traps are ideal for critical events where quick notification is essential but they requires some processing power on the network device when sent in large volume. However syslog are less resource intensive where syslog messages are logged locally fist and then forwarded, reducing the workload on the device itself.

SNMP polling time interval plays significant role in performance. There is a trade off to consider where a shorter polling interval provides more detailed insights into the netwotk but it can be reaource intensive. While default settings are designed to work well in most scenarios, it's essential to carefully adjust the polling interval considering device capability and criticality of data.

When deploying SNMP, stick to industry standards. Use standardized MIBs for consistent data exchange. Regularly update configurations to match best practices. This ensures compatibility and efficiency across devices and systems, fostering a robust network management environment.
