It is always important to balance between optimization to a specific case, vs. a more robust, but larger solution. Model pruning, and any algorithm optimization should be welcomed, but also considered for other deployment and new types of input. This should also be viewed from a HW perspective - if very specific HW is required, that needs maintenance, replacement parts etc., so such optimization might be great in the short term, will it hold for year to come is to be reviewed.

A company or a lab often treat same type of images and making all this tools available to everybody sure saves millions for the company in the long run.

Conferences also allow participants to present their work, gain feedback, enhance visibility, and be inspired by industry leaders, fostering growth and advancement in the field of computer vision.

Also, collaborate with peers and professionals in the field. Networking can expose one to different perspectives and open opportunities for learning from others' experiences.

Having done this extensively for more than a decade, there is one key thing which is missing in the topics above, and that is choosing right preprocessing techniques. Today images come form various sources and with that they induce various challenges in processing too. For example an environmentally exposed source may have higher pixel error in high frequency domain, and in that case one may need to choose a frequency domain filtering technique such as Fourier transform and so on so forth. So all in all, pre processing is absolutely key when it comes to getting high efficiency CV outcomes.

Many times a POC is just the first stage so it is important to balance between a quick win and the long term solution. Keeping your code clean, repeatability of training and testing, benchmarks for new model are just a few examples of a long term project. These will also help in case of performance deterioration, that could be caused by changed weather conditions, lower quality input image due to dirt on the lens, or a different encoding mechanism (and a million other reasons). Consider how robust your solution needs to be and how the team will handle new input types, new deployment sites or new HW.
