One key theme I tell my team prior to research tasks is to know what the Commander (leader) wants to know. This is always followed with my next prompt is to understand why they want to know more about a certain piece of information. This helps us as a team to prepare our answer to Command's question, "So what?" and "What if?".

From my point of view however a colleague is skillful, what really counts is the capabilities of delivering a very tangible results not an excuses for his or her failure. As an academic researcher who has dipped into industry/product research here are some insights: Are they theory-driven? How much background and lateral knowledge do they have? Having a good overview of the area is a great skill before narrowing the specific aims of the research. Are they organized and meticulous in documenting their process? It is important to organize and document ideas for the big picture. Also helpful is documenting every step of the process, including version control, checklists, and procedures. Errors can be diagnosed and corrected easily if the process is documented well.

Upon completion of any task, people tend to switch off and move on to the next. However, before we move on, it is imperative to take our time to reflect on what went well and why, as well as what could have been better. This helps any team to build on their strengths and address any weaknesses. As a team lead, this is also an opportunity to observe your team members intellectual curiosity and mental fortitude. Most importantly, it acts as part of a self-reflection into your own actions and decisions.

Ueshiba said, "The moment you start caring about who is 'good' and who is 'bad' among your peers, you are opening a gateway in your heart through which malice will enter." And thirdly, as J. Krishnamurti cautioned, all comparative evaluation is violence. If you consider yourself such a skilled researcher as to assume the authority to evaluate your colleagues (and thus determine their future), first evaluate your own arrogance.
