Decision-makers can better brainstorm and assess potential alternatives by clearly articulating the problem's underlying causes and goals. This initial clarity makes sure that the decision-making process is based on a thorough comprehension of the problem at hand and opens the door for an informed and more logical investigation of potential solutions.

Defining the problem is similar to being a detective at the start of a case. You first need to understand what the issue is, this is your ‘crime scene’. You then gather all the relevant information and evidence, these are your ‘clues’. You identify the causes of the problem, these are your ‘suspects’. And finally, you determine what a successful resolution would look like, this is your ‘case closure’. Tools like brainstorming, SWOT analysis, or root cause analysis are your ‘forensic tools’ that help you piece together the puzzle. Remember, a well-defined problem is halfway to being solved.

Rational decision-making promotes safe and effective services at many different levels. To apply competently, one must have clear objectives and an open mind for feedback and diverse input.

Where is your Compass pointing at? Establishing the criteria is like a compass to your journey ahead. What this means, is that you need to know what matters the most, what are the challenges that require attention and how? and what success looks like. Outline the clear standards and expectations - like Time, Cost, Feasibility, and Impact; and then a roadmap can be created to evaluate your available options. These criteria help keep everyone focused and ensure the chosen path aligns with with organization's goal and values.

These criteria are the specific factors or attributes that are important in reaching a decision. Determine decision criteria Consider the following factors as starting points: Financial impact?— How your decision affects you and your company in terms of monetary value. Client impact?—?How your decision will impact your relationships with existing clients. Coworker impact?— How your decision will affect the people you work with.? Personal impact?— How your decision affects your personal well-being and career trajectory. Reputational impact?— How your decision affects your reputation in your industry. A bit of flexibility and open-mindedness is needed here. What appears on your criteria list should be dictated by the context of the problem. There are actually no hard and fast rules. In one instance, a criterion may be cost, while it may manifest as price in another.

One or two options are a dilemma, decision power and freedom of action as a leader starts with 3+ options! Generate a list of potential alternatives or options that could address the problem or decision at hand. Be creative and consider a wide range of possibilities. To generate alternatives, based on the gathered information, I would use various techniques like brainstorming and knowledge reasoning to generate a comprehensive list of potential solutions or alternatives. Also by carefully analyzing the input and understanding the specific problem or question at hand.

The biggest issue here is being able to think roundly enough to exhaust the possibilities about alternatives. No matter how disciplined the process, if for any reason the ground for the best options is not fully covered, the final decision may still not bring favourable outcomes. Hence, wherever practicable, it may do some good to sit on this aspect for a day or two before moving to the next step in the process.

The third step in rational decision making is to identify the different alternatives. Alternatives can be defined as the different possible ways to solve a problem. For eg: If you want to visit any place, then there might be 3 different roads that will lead you to that place, but you will select the path which will help you reach your destination quickly. Similarly, for any rational decision making, there might be hundreds of alternatives. First try and identify those alternatives, so that you can choose the best alternative among them that will help you solve the problem quickly.

Have it in mind to consider multiple criteria or dimensions that are relevant to the decision-making process. Also, encourage participation from individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and expertise to foster creativity and generate a broad range of ideas.

Implement and monitor is the most critical/rational decision you will make. Once you select the best alternative to the problem, you should implement it to completely solve your current problem. If the alternative didn't solve the problem, then test another potential solution that you came up with.

Here is another variation using a first principles approach that can enhance this methodology. 1. Deconstruct the situation or problem into its most basic issues. Remove generalizations but you can keep informed assumptions. 2. Question these basic elements/issues. Layer in a 5 Why process for deeper understanding and an RCA. 3. Reframe the situation or problem with this new understanding. Try 2 different frames if you can. 4. Now pick the key decision-making criteria. Here is where these two approaches intersect. 5. Finally, generate the alternatives for these two new frames. Based on the results, you may be able to pick a clear winner or pivot from one frame to another.

In my opinion, we have to first of all gather our facts, opinions and alternatives before making a decision. This will help in addition of structures to a decision, build logic, discipline and consistency into your decision making process.
