When it comes to alignment and team performance, the greatest contributor is "why." And that doesn't always mean the big picture or the "why" behind the vision of the organization. Much of the time, people need to understand the "why" as it relates to their every day purpose...Why should they keep showing up every day? What difference are they making? People who understand their purpose at work are more motivated, fulfilled, resilient, healthy, and loyal (more likely to stay at the company).

2 How to assess alignment

Before you can align your team's goals with your organization's goals, it's essential to assess the current level of alignment. To do this, ask yourself and your team some questions such as what are the main goals and priorities of your organization and team, how do the goals support or relate to each other, and how well do you and your team understand the vision, mission, and values? Additionally, consider how often you communicate with other teams or departments, how you measure progress and celebrate achievements, and how you handle feedback, challenges, and conflicts. By asking these questions and using tools such as surveys, interviews, or focus groups to gather feedback from stakeholders, you can identify gaps, strengths, and opportunities for alignment.

3 How to create alignment

Once you have assessed the current level of alignment, you can create a plan to improve it. To do so, it's important to communicate your organization's goals, vision, and values clearly and frequently to your team. Involve them in setting and reviewing their own goals, making sure they are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) and aligned with your organization's goals. Recognizing and rewarding their efforts and achievements is also essential. Furthermore, encourage collaboration and communication among your team and other teams or departments. Empower them to make decisions and take ownership of their tasks by delegating authority and responsibility appropriately. Provide autonomy and flexibility within clear boundaries and expectations while supporting their learning and development.

A key factor to recognize here is that implementing a plan to improve alignment, also looks like change. A shift in how goals are set and achieved, how things are communicated, what's expected from the culture (etc.) are all changes away from the way things are currently done. Navigating major change can cause disruptions because people handle change in all different ways. So when building a plan for improving alignment consider how your leadership team will support everyone in navigating change along the way.

Creating alignment is an ongoing process that requires regular monitoring and maintenance. To ensure your team stays motivated and engaged, you should review and update goals and priorities periodically, making sure they are still relevant and aligned with the organization's goals. Additionally, it is important to communicate and coordinate with your team and other stakeholders frequently, providing them with updates on progress and challenges. Evaluating performance and alignment can be done through quantitative and qualitative indicators, such as metrics or surveys. After analyzing the results, you can share the findings and recommendations with your team. Finally, reinforcing and modeling the organization's vision, mission, and values is key to inspiring others to align their actions with the organization's goals.

As I noted in the previous section, it is important to recognize that implementing a plan to improve alignment, also looks like change. And as everyone responds and reacts to change differently, leaders must remember that they play a role in how alignment is maintained along the path of change. Leaders are the ones who can shift the perspective of change from being a series of hurdles to overcome, to being seen as opportunities for growth.

Aligning your team's goals with your organization's goals can have many advantages, such as increased motivation and engagement, improved performance and productivity, and enhanced satisfaction and retention.
