Steps I use in most of my agile frameworks comprises of- 1. Understanding the Vision and Goals 2. Involving Key Stakeholders 3. Define Measurable Objectives 4. Identify Critical Features and Functionality 5. Use SMART Criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely) 6. Prioritize Acceptance Criteria 7. Create Testable Criteria 8. Document Acceptance Criteria And the most important being Iterate and Adapt.

Broadly there are 2 types of acceptance criteria - 1. scenario based acceptance criteria - the scenario-oriented format is the acceptance criteria type that comes in the scenario form and illustrates each criterion. It is approached through the Given/When/Then (GWT) sequence that looks like this: Given some precondition When I do some action Then I expect some result This approach was inherited from behavior-driven development (BDD) and provides a consistent structure that helps testers define testing features aligned with project vision. 2. Rule based acceptance criteria - The rule-oriented form entails that there is a set of rules that describe the behavior of a system. Based on these rules, you can draw specific checklists and template

Having a roadmap that identifies the outcomes (and associated metrics) the business wants to drive in the next quarter or two as it executes on the business strategy is also a good starting point. Ideally new features and enhancements should be grouped under these outcomes with the assumption or hypothesis that they will directly or indirectly contribute to achieving them and driving the associated metrics. I have been in organizations where the product roadmap was more about scheduling new feature work than executing on the business strategy. Often when this happens important acceptance criteria related to collecting metrics, setting up funnels and analytics dashboards, adding support for A|B testing, etc. get missed.
