There's so many hands involved in a recruitment process: recruiting, hiring managers, interviewers, HR, finance etc. Sometimes we make mistakes that are the fault of recruiting, sometimes at the fault of our cross-functional partners. But at the end of the day, our job is dealing with people and their livelihoods, their ability to feed their families and our responsibility is to take ownership of the end-to-end process. Apologise to candidates, take ownership of problems when they arise and use what you learn to drive internal change and do better in the future.

I'm going to address this internally to ensure this is mitigated and doesn't happen again." What would you add? It's tough.

But a duty of care becomes inherent to your role when you stay in contact and show concern for the candidate journey (which is a stressful one).

The lens of different generations or cultural backgrounds can be very different from your own, and therefore it's essential to be in step with their needs and expectations to ensure you can attract the best talent.

Please be sure to proceed with caution. From a compliance lens, you'll want to make sure not to admit fault for anything that opens up the company to risk. If a candidate feels they weren't hired because of age, saying "sorry" could be deemed an admittance of guilt. Ask questions instead. 'What examples can you share that made you feel that way? While age had nothing to do with our hiring decision, we take the perception just as seriously. What can we do to communicate our reasoning in the future better?'

The old adage, “You can’t please everyone” is true. Somewhere, someday, someone will let you know you let them down. And it’s ok. We’re human. What I have learned is that how you handle that mistake is what really makes the difference. The suggestions shared are spot on, especially when it comes to apologies and appreciation. When I have dealt with negative feedback, I attempt to talk with the offended individual and learn all I can, hoping to make it right. It has worked out well, most of the time. And when it hasn’t? I remember, “You can’t please everyone”.

I'm with Jenn on this one. I don't think "apologize" should be the first reaction. What if the candidate is just reacting to an undesirable outcome? Acknowledging the candidates emotions is essential. "Thank you for sharing your feedback." and then I would seek to understand more about the situation, and probe to identify the root cause. Once identified, reaching back out to the candidate, and sharing an outcome/resolution/changes, etc. is also an important step. It might be then that an apology is warranted. While I am all for admitting mistakes, this isn't a situation where saying "I am sorry" is your first reaction.

There are two things to consider here 1. Solve the current issue in hand: Have a discussion with the candidate, understand their point of view, do an RCA & resolve 2. Solve for the long term: Keep running surveys, look for feedbacks, look for patterns, improve basis the feedback 3. Use tools to avoid delays in sharing feedbacks on time 4. Keep monitoring, don't just wait till you receive a bad feedback

Just chill... The negative feedbacks are just about the fact that candidate and the vacancy is not suitable. The candidate may feel upset but it's because that he/she wants this job too much, nothing about the feedbacks are good or bad. HR and company recruits for suitable candidates, not the best one.
