How can you address faculty resistance to change?

I think understand their concerns by engaging in open and honest conversations with faculty members to understand their concerns and perspectives regarding the proposed change. Listen actively and empathetically to their viewpoints. This step is essential for building trust and creating an environment where faculty members feel heard and valued. Involve faculty members in the decision-making process as much as possible. Seek their input and ideas on how to implement the change effectively. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of ownership and increases the likelihood of successful adoption. Encourage faculty members to share their concerns, suggestions, and alternative solutions, and demonstrate that their opinions are valued.

Teachers are typically not included in the decisions that impact them. Unfortunately, decisions that are implemented may not have been well thought out, but implemented anyway. This causes the decisions to be walked back, revisited, and sometimes restarted. This causes significant challenge and confusion for teachers. Schools should utilize a decision-making model, and then, a model for implementation. After the decisions are made teachers should be a part of the implementation plans- this is where most decisions go south … Resistance is frustration from not being involved in the decision (as experts- those closest to the students) lack of clarity (the why are even we doing this?), and being constantly asked to “fix” a botched decision.

I understand resistance because I was one that resisted change when wasn’t part of the solution or was kept in the dark about why the change needed to occur. As a leader I always faced resistance head on, but I started with the why! I walked the staff through the data tgat showed why change needed to occur and I engaged them in the process of determining what needed to be done. Although I knew what needed to be done, it had to cine from the front line or nothing would change..

It is human nature to resist change as it is associated with discomfort or pain. When the individuals are convinced that the gain is much more than the pain, they support the change. If some one try to do change, just for the sake of change, then off-course those who get affected will resist change. If we make sensible, gradual changes taking in to confidence the stakeholders who get affected, and gaining their trust, then the changes are supported well. When I was the Program Chair at HCT, my faculty did support me well to make many changes which lead to program success, growth, and accreditation. It is the responsibility of the leader to carefully apply the change management process, assess the rational, and impact of the change

When faculty do not understand the necessity to change, it's not upon them--it's upon the leadership. Academic leaders must show the pain of not changing and the pleasure or profits of changing. Then you need to start the change as a collective, and make it possible by supporting faculty rather than leaving it up to them to find out how and what to change. Finally, persevere and pivot where necessary, involving the faculty. It's a people's business after all. Faculty and administration are not natural friends--leadership must make clear the necessity of working together for the greater good.

Las personas no cambiamos porque alguien más nos lo pida: cambiamos porque algo nos duele tanto que estamos dispuestos a tolerar el dolor del cambio antes de sostener el status quo; o porque tenemos un deseo muy grande que nos pone en movimiento. En ese sentido, la pregunta es cuáles son las Ds del cambio de los docentes: sus DOLORES y DESEOS, mapeados por ellos mismos. Y desde ahí empezar a construir el cambio.

Communication is the key to making change within your organization. If this will be a long term project, it is important that staff understand benchmarks along the way. Leaders must embrace and celebrate these benchmarks and at the same time be open to discussing what is not working and how to adjust the project over time. A leader must connect the vision and benefits to all stakeholders so they feel part of the process.

Un camino clave es lograr que la comunicación al docente logre “hacerle sentido”. De lo contrario va a ser muy difícil que acepte el cambio. Si no se logra conectar el propósito del cambio con el propósito de vida del docente es muy difícil que se logre la conexión base sobre la cual el cambio efectivamente se asuma como propio. Y esa labor de encontrar la teclas que logren activar ese hacer sentido del docente es responsabilidad de quien lanza el proceso de cambio, ello implica a que no se puede asumir que esa carga la debe asumir el docente.

Involve staff in the change itself as well as communicating the change to come. Staff need to understand the benefits and the "cost" of the change to the future. You have to be okay with staff leaving if they do not share the vision and do not want to put in the work. Help these staff to find a place where they will be comfortable and productive; it may be in another division, another company, or another industry. The change being made will attract the right people to carry out the mission and vision.

In my experience, I have always been able to get buy-in by educating about the vision. Once your team understands the vision, they align with the ideas and buy-in is an automatic next step. Once the goals are explained and the shared mission is discussed, the urgency and relevance are paramount and become second nature.

One thing I've found helpful is for leaders to be transparent with why change is necessary and back it up with proven data. Also, allowing faculty members to have a voice is imperative. They want to be validated. Establish committees for faculty to sign up to offer insight and considerations. This builds team efficacy and minimizes resistance.

Indeed, the above-mentioned statement is really crucial when implementing change. As I mentioned previously, the experience and expertise of educators need to serve as the foundation for change that implements innovative ways of carrying out the mission of the institution.

Building relationships and building a culture of inclusion and support is necessary to resistance to change. No one person can help an organization thrive it takes everyone. Often times, those of resistance may need to have small meaningful, success. Finding ways to help individuals move past fears, lack of knowledge or understanding of the task can help to combat some issues that may be causing the resistance. There will still be some challenges, resistance, but hopefully, minimizing the number of those in resistance, they become the outliers. Becoming outliers, they will eliminate themselves or they will eventually change.

“If you want to guarantee people will eat at the staff potluck then give them an opportunity to bring a dish!” This simple analogy drives home the importance of staff buy in. People are more willing to embrace change if they feel their voice was heard and they are a part of that change. A top down approach, alienates people and rarely results in long standing success. Change should encompass the needs of your stakeholders and reflect your school community. Collaborative change is neither easy nor quick. It will be paved with tough conversations and compromise. Nevertheless, if you embrace the belief that you value the contributions of your faculty and their expertise, they will in turn embrace the opportunity to be stewards of change.

Change is the only constant thing in the world yet it is always RESISTED! The reasons people resist change is due to many reasons- from social , psychological to financial. As educators we have to keep on changing our "game" to make our classrooms engaging. I believe, open and honest communication is the first step towards bringing down the wall of resistance. Next is involvement in the process of change so that fear of change decreases, insecurities lessen and clarity is achieved. Thus we can say that EMPOWER to ENGAGE is one of the ways to reduce resistance to change.

A common source of resistance is the lack of skills or confidence to implement the change. Therefore, you need to provide adequate training and support for the faculty to help them develop the necessary competencies and capabilities. You can use various methods and formats, such as workshops, webinars, coaching, mentoring, or peer learning, to deliver the training and support. You also need to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the training and support and make adjustments as needed

This is a key element. If you want change to occur, you need to provide the resources, training, and time. As a leader, it’s also important to understand that everyone will learn at a different pace, so respecting that is important. As leaders, supporting the staff in the process is essential. And recognising their effort is important to keep the morale high and to boost their motivation.

El reconocimiento es clave en la trayectoria laboral de cualquier profesional. Por tanto, en educación hay que instalar el reconocimiento en la cultura organizacional, hacerlo parte del proceso de desarrollo profesional docente. Si tu misión la ejecutaste por sobre lo esperado. La institución debe actuar a través del reconocimiento. Esa acción modelará al resto de colaboradores. Por último, no solo hablamos de reconocimiento económico, sino que este puede ser emocional o social. La tarea realizada por sobre el promedio, se debe potenciar y valorar.

The initial strategy to tackle resistance is to genuinely commit to the change. Stay authentic and demonstrate to your team that you believe in the positive impact of the change and are actively guiding them towards it. Another effective approach is focusing on small wins. Instead of trying to convince all faculty members at once, break down the changes into smaller, achievable steps. This way, each faculty member can experience small victories, gradually building momentum and a sense of progress that makes it easier for others to join in.

Educators are continuously subjected to change--pedagogical systems change, assessment methodology changes, behavior management approaches change, laws change. Covid and lock down and remote teaching of course took this to entirely new level. I've had numerous careers and nothing prepared me for the continuous flux of teaching practices. Faculty routinely shift entire philosophies when new leaders come in. Often initiatives are not successfully implemented before the next system is introduced and suddenly the latest system is abandoned and forgotten for the next. Maybe reluctance to change comes from continuous flux and tinkering, and schools should commit to systems for three years before implementing anything new?

There needs to be a constant recognition that no one likes change. And that the idea of change can fill some with a fear of the unknown and a fear of not knowing where they will fit in to the new changes that are being proposed. So it's really important to understand whether the resistance is a fear based emotional response to change or if it's a sign that blocks are being put in place to prevent the changes from taking place.

In order for growth mindset practices to successful, trust and pyschological safety need be part of the organisation's culture. Demonstrating that you have your faculty's best interests at heart, even when things are challenging, will help to create trust during times of change.

Your willingness to learn, accept feedback, and tackle challenges head-on inspires your team to mirror these values. Leading by example in this way not only reduces resistance to change but also cultivates an environment where growth and development are embraced as collective goals.

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. It contrasts with a fixed mindset, which sees qualities as innate and unchangeable. To promote a growth mindset, model it by embracing challenges, learning from failures, seeking feedback, and persisting in the face of setbacks. Encourage others to adopt this mindset by praising effort, emphasizing the power of "yet" (as in "I don't understand this...yet"), and highlighting the journey of improvement rather than just the end result.

Most of the times, resistance to change isn't necessarily because faculty are anti-change, it is because they aren't able to see the true potential. A useful tool in helping our team overcome resistance to change is the Beckhard-Harris change model (D * V * F > R). To overcome the resistance (R), we should first have dissatisfaction with the status quo or desire to change (D). Secondly, we should share a vision or we want to work towards (V). Thirdly, know the first steps to work towards the shared vision (F) - clarity about what should I do today to realise the vision that we share. A weighted combination of 3 factors is crucial to overcome the resistance. it need not be forced. It can happen organically during brainstorming sessions.

Change being a natural phenomenon comes time to time.Stagnancy is not healthy for anyone.This should be a common understanding.Nevertheless one has to have a vision as to the change that is taking place is there any reason or a kind of a herd mentality.So it would be good if we have a face to face conversation and give them a chance to speak out their minds.Many times it’s been observed that due to preconceived notions about the negativity of change creates wild imagination.Secondly before making a change the benefits of the change purpose should also be informed.For the stake holders do have a right to information so that resistance can be bridged.Transparency is the key to resolve resistance before it crops up . One has to be flexible .

If you have a true growth mindset embedded within the team then resistance to change should not occur. Therefore, first begin with your growth mindset strategy. Then, ensure open dialogue and communication, team involvement and consideration so that they are acutely aware of the rationale for change. The majority of the time, resistance occurs due to poor, or lack of, communication. With the full information and a growth mindset mentality, resistance to change should be eradicated.

Consider getting some 'early adopters' on board who can champion the change. It can be really valuable to have people within teams who can be an ongoing positive voice for change outside of more formal opportunities for discussion.

In implementing and creating change, it's also important to document it. As part of growth, it's important to show one's roots or history: - where did you come from/start? - who were you? - what did you do? Some people relate to narratives more than they relate to statistics and reports. When you combine them together, you create a more compelling case that speaks to human emotion AND leadership.
