During a presentation, it is crucial to know your objective and your audience. By clearly understanding what you aim to achieve with your presentation, you can tailor your message to meet specific goals. Moreover, a deep knowledge of your audience allows you to adjust your language, examples, and tone to better resonate with their expectations and needs. Understanding who makes up your audience enables you to establish a more meaningful connection, generate increased interest, and ensure more effective communication.

In addition to what’s already been shared. Plan to arrive at least one hour prior to the presentation and spend that time getting to know the attendees. During that time, learn as much as you can about the attendees (what their needs are, what they will gain during the presentation.) This also applies to the typeface and writing style.

There are many elements to pay attention to when it comes to theme design, to include, colour, texture, and many more. As an example, black is a fitting colour for presentations on topics involving ominous themes. Last month, I did a demo presentation for my students that was about a murder case, and black was the colour scheme I used. I also often use the "Papyrus" theme on Keynote when doing any presentation on substantially pre-modern history. What it really comes down to is knowing the message you want to convey.

My client said he just wanted his employees to stay awake during his monthly meetings. We both chuckled when he said this, but I knew he was serious. “Show me how you run your meetings,” I suggested. He walked me through the dry, informational, Power Point laden process. Even he sounded bored. Taking his content, I turned it into a story and showed him how much more engaging that approach would be. Over our next several coaching sessions, he continued to grow in the process. With a genuine smile, he told me later that everyone had stayed awake and most had laughed as he now told stories instead of running through a bullet-list agenda. Recount a story to illustrate your point and engage, entertain, and educate your wide-awake audience!

This is one of the hardest skills in public speaking. There seems to be two groups of people. One's that are 'naturally' funny and ones that don't have a 'default' level of humor. Both have their own challenges. For the first group it's important to practice and get a lot of feedback. Trial and error is the key. The second group biggest struggle is to deliver a joke or humor in a believable way. Staying close to yourself is in both cases the best advice. Keep it heavily based on true events. So make sure to get into those events. And keep it plain, simple, stupid. In this way the humor will land to the biggest part of your audience and will achieve the best results in the form of laughs and interaction.

In my opinion, humor is the most powerful way for a speaker to be remembered by the audience. It works best if you make fun of yourself and combine this with valuable learning. Everyone has their own sense of humor and that's what gives it a personal touch. For example, I have received some derogatory comments on some successful speeches that have been published on the internet. I took these up in speeches and dragged myself through the cocoa.

There is no doubt that a presentation with visual aids will be more impactful than one without. However, be careful! In my experience, less is more. 1. Use a picture, a phrase, an aid etc per slide. 2. Don't make your audience read your slides and listen to you at the same time. 3. Don't move through your slides too fast so that they can't capture the full experience of watching you and your secondary material.

The fun of having presentation slides is that you get to be as creative as you want. You can have visual aids to capture your audience’s attention and for your audience to capture your message. However, you have to make sure that your audience understands what you are talking about by having interactions in between. Not everyone will be comfortable asking you questions during or after, so you have to be creative as well in making sure you get feedback from them in any form. They will remember your message from pictures, videos, quotes and most importantly your delivery. Don’t use the visual aids to relay the message. Believe in yourself and your creativity. Your visual aids is only an extension of your presentation.

Similar to the disciplined rehearsal required in sports or music performances, mastering a presentation involves extensive practice. It is through the repetition of delivering the same content numerous times that the presentation becomes ingrained, flowing seamlessly and becoming an integral part of your persona. The practice not only ensures fluency in conveying the message but also instills a sense of ease and naturalness, enabling the presenter to connect more effectively with the audience.

"The best way to learn something is by teaching it to others." In my experience dry-runs with co-workers or team members are invaluable. Practicing on your own, aloud, in front of the mirror or driving on your way to work, may help, but the human factor is next to none, especially if your audience knows the topic. This allows you to really learn all the nooks and crannies of your presentation/topic and if there are any kinks to work out, or even technical difficulties, they will be discovered long before the real deal. As mentioned, this will only contribute to a more successful outcome and more confidence in yourself and the material you are presenting on.

It is important to ensure that the stories and examples you are going to share support the key messages. It may directly connect with the audience. Try avoiding tangents which are distractions . Your personal lessons can be a great medium for connection . It not only demonstrates your uniqueness but also highlights your understanding of the subject matter

I lose count of how many great efforts were destroyed by issues related to the presentation venue. Many presentations are disrupted by nearby activities, weather, or intruders.

If you're able to connect with some of your audience before you speak, it will give you more insight about how relevant your topic is to the audience. Maybe you have many stories/anecdotes related to your topic that you could share, and maybe one will resonate better than the rest which you can discover when you connect with your audience. Related to this, is the way you present or speak goes a long way. Be mindful of the energy you have, and your tone of voice. This may seem silly, but connect your material with your emotions to ensure a more empathetic and relatable experience for the audience.

The first thing you should NOT say in a presentation is: “Thank you.” “How are you?” “Wasn’t that a great meal . . .” “My name is . . . “ To avoid warm-up fillers sentences, write an introduction for yourself. Send it ahead of time to the meeting planner and bring a printed, large font copy with you on the day of your talk. The last words of the introduction should be your name, as in, “Please help me welcome John Smith!” When you get on stage, start your talk immediately. Have a hook, a quote, a question, or a story. When these are your first sentences, you show polish and professionalism. Your audience can relax; you’ve got this. Consider your opening lines, and like your closing statement, make them memorable and impactful!
