A great cheap way to light a scene evenly that I have used recently for a client is to use a vinyl 'frosted' shower curtain to diffuse light. I personally use a strobe, but a great alternative in a pinch are work lights available at Walmart and big box stores. Try to find something with an LED bulb or chip and a lot of lumens in the 5000-5600 Kelvin range. Since this is constant light, you will likely want to use a tripod as it's not nearly as powerful as a strobe burst, but is still very usable for inanimate subjects. I also use white and black foamboard and poster board to add or subtract light when needed.

The lighting has to be according to the camera you are using for the shot, also go for the optimal settings of the camera to set the exposure on point. Do not try to add a flare unless you think the shot would be empty without it. Although, shots look good with flares and light leaks but, it may deteorate the dynamic range of the overall image as camera finds it difficult to adjust the exposure then. If you can get it perfect manually, hats off, go for it.

While you typically can only optimize your lens by finding its sharpest settings and using it here (look online, each lens has a sweet spot), when it comes to light the sky is the limit. Use what works. In most professional work (including photography), time is money. If your workflow works best with free software, more power to you. However, if the latest and greatest features are enticing you on the other side of a paywall, time spent into learning it or emulating said feature on your preferred freeware must be taken into consideration as well.

I believe that when starting out on a new topic, it is useful to attend a class where you can interact with the teacher. It will save you a lot of time in getting started and becoming aware of what the topic is broadly about. Importantly, you must ask questions and listen to peers. Most of the basic questions are the same. The issue now is not having access to information, but rather access to too much information and getting lost in it. Use the 80/20 guideline. Take a proper basic course to become aware of the first 20% of what topic is about. Use that knowledge to start acquiring the rest of the skills, which can be never-ending.

I have very useful YouTube as an online resource to learn, but is not the only one. I find it extremely useful to analyze photos and content from creators that work on my interests or similar, so social media is a great source too. For example if there is a chance to get free intro videos, to get a feel about how the course and style will be, that is something I highly recommend for paid courses.

I feel confidence is your greatest asset and while there are many ways to grow your confidence in photography such as starting correctly, learning from others etc, there are as many ways to lose confidence too and that is something to be mindful of. If you try to do too much too soon before you have the skills it can really affect your progress. Being realistic and honest about what you can and cant do at each stage of your development is a good practice to adopt to safeguard your confidence.

In my experience, one shouldn’t compromise with the quality of deliverables, rather you should compromise with the number of deliverables. It’s really tough to shoot good or bad depending on budget. When you’re shooting something you always give your best.

So many businesses seem keen to, shall we say . . . expand the truth. Be honest with your clients and if what they are asking is outside your skill set - tell them. By all means offer a deal where a win/win is possible, you gain the experience, they get a better price - but a full on blag will often come back to haunt you. Customers appreciate honesty.

One should value their time and experience, which reflect their standards of work and quality. I only accept projects that meet or exceed my budget threshold, and I don’t compromise on that. You may work for free or very low cost only if you choose to, not because you have to. Also, look for projects that spark your curiosity and creativity, not just pay the bills.

This is where a good producer can help. It's possible to reduce the cost for each party while still producing quality content. Receiving an RFP from a client/brand and dreaming about what's going to make the shoot the MOST successful obviously usually comes with a higher budget- more to work with and get everything you want/need to make a vision come to life. When speaking to the client about realistic expectations, that's when you can start honing in what's "needed" and what's "wanted". Sometimes that's less deliverables, sometimes that's a slightly smaller crew, sometimes that's not as many options for variations on one look. There are ways to hone in after asking the right questions of your clients and trying to meet their "necessities".

Regardless of budget size, never compromise the safety of people on your set, including yourself. Fun and creative ideas can pose real hazards. Always step back and assess risks: Are you too close to the street? Is your model near the edge? Is your light directly above the grill? The last thing you want is to halt the shoot and rush to the hospital.
