How can you adapt to remote work environments?

The workplace and the setup is very important, if it's maintained in a decent way that'll help you to concentrate better and increase your productivity as well.

I've never been a big believer of home office, but a lot of it came from having a poor setup. Finding a place in the house that can be separated and dedicated to work is a huge advantage and understandably something not everyone has the privilege to get. Other than that, 2 screens and a mouse is the most basic higiene to get proper setup. If you do more than 2 days a week @home, get a good chair. Your 50 year old self will thank you later.

Believe it or not, your workspace can be the deal breaker for achieving your goals and maximizing productivity. Get clear on a few questions: what brings you joy, what motivates you, what inspires you, and what do you need physically to support you - is it a standing desk or ambient lighting? One of the best benefits of working remotely is creating a workspace that works best for you. So, while you must ensure you are set up for success from a technical standpoint (computer, Internet, etc.), ensure your workspace supports your well-being, too.

Some of the ways I make my home office feel festive include adding photos of my family, adding a dog bed to the room for my pup Max, having a comfortable ergonomic chair and ofcourse a holiday scented candle. I find clutter to be very distracting so I’d say my desk is quite minimal but I love it. No distractions!

Show up for your colleagues. If you were working in a physical office, you might be able to sense if a colleague looks out of sorts, and you might do or say something to make them feel better. Establishing a routine and boundaries is very personal, and I don't think it applies to everyone. That is to say, I don't think everyone needs it. I don't have a routine really and I don't have boundaries....and that works for me. I work all over my house. I open my laptop when I have inspiration or idea. I work in the evenings if I want to or need to. I do, however, put aside the work to spend time with family, work out, have meals, and take vacations. Most of us who work remotely from home have a work life BLEND rather than a work life BALANCE.

Having a dedicated "office space" is crucial for remote work success. If others will be home while you're working, communication is key. Set office hours. When you're working on a project, be at my desk during set hours. Don't take challenging work to the other rooms in your home, keep it in the office. But be responsive to things like important email and Slack messages, which can be done from your phone. Lastly, meet up with coworkers in person if at all possible, it can make you better at your jobs and improve camaraderie.

With your team, your boss(es), and even those in other departments, you want to make it a habit and a priority when working remotely, to consistently check in and engage with others beyond the transactional needs of your role. Use Loom, Notion and other tools to work async. I used Loom to send video explanation, give my coworkers context. When it comes to design feedback, I have time window. After that window, it's production time, so no modification will be considered. There might be some flexibility, depending on the modification and its impact, but I try to keep the feedback loop time-sensitive. It's easy to sink into an ever-editing mode, but once you commit to a shipping time, it's more effective to let the team know and be clear about the expectations.

Having regular calls with your colleagues enable you not only to be in constant touch with them, it's super helpful to follow the timelines for your work done in collaboration with other colleagues. This enables you to identify any bottleneck proactively and gives you room to discuss other work related matters as well. Send recurring meeting invites to your team members based on your interaction with them for usual work items.

Add in team communication that is more focused on connecting the people than the company. Share memes, discuss pop culture, ask for favorites lists, etc. Add a specific Slack or other internal comms channel for it. Create an environment that makes the team members feel like they are part of something and not just on an island to themselves.

Don't ever stop learning! That's the mantra. Keep upskilling yourself :) I've observed this, people who have zeal to learn new things and are open to experiment grow at an exponential rate.

A good example is when quick-turn and culturally-relevant content comes into play. You can define goals at 9am, brainstorm creative at 12pm, build channel strategy at 3pm, define editorial by 5pm, and have a remote employee in an opposite time zone spend the next 8h having it come to life for it to go live immediately or the next day. See it as a benefit rather than a detriment.

A couple of things I would like to add: 1). In today’s remote environment, be mindful of cultural differences when you communicate with team members and others across national borders. This includes making jokes and using slangs and abbreviations. 2). When working across time zones, make sure all meetings are on the calendars of everyone involved with the correct meeting time and meeting link.

Prioritize self-care to maintain overall well-being. Take breaks, get some fresh air, and incorporate activities that help you relax and recharge.
