How can writers resolve conflict with clients?

The best things are: 1. Do not react immediately. 2. Sit with the problem. 3. Don't get offended. 4. Understand the problem when you are calmed down. 5. Figure out a way to make both the parties win. No one thrives alone in business.

Actually none of that. IMHO, the best way to deal with conflicts is to evade them. Let me elaborate. We used to write decks to clients as such: - V1 - Receive comments - V2 Conflicts usually occurred after V1. But after years of writing, we optimized: - Pre-V1: Detailed structure of thought. - Pre-V1: Design concept (how it’ll look like) Now that the clients know what to expect in terms of content and visuals, conflicts rarely occur.

I would add that communication is key and can resolve most conflicts before it can get worse. But prevention is always better, saving so much time and sparing everyone from unnecessary stress and unhappiness. We all know clients are stressed and busy. As the copywriter, it's best to keep our part clean: * Try to respect their time and (reasonable) deadlines, deliver on time and if that isn't possible, communicate. * Be open to feedback, make sure to understand clearly. * Be easy to work with, without being a push-over. * Check your work, double-check and get an extra pair of eyes on it if necessary (or sleep on it and come back with fresh eyes to spot mistakes).

Just like behaviour is situational, every conflict situation is unique, and it's important to identify it's uniqueness then adapt an approach based on the specific circumstances and the personalities involved. For any conflict to be resolved amicable or effectively, the resolution process requires one to be patient, active listen, & be willing or open to finding mutually beneficial solution/s. But remember to own up to your wrong doing.

One of the first lessons I learned as a professional writer was to have the courage of my convictions. Writing is a persuasive art so if you aren’t confident of your opinions then you can’t negotiate from a place of power. This doesn’t mean you need to always hold a hard line. People get it when you know what you know. Confident people can accept being wrong and embrace conflict not as a challenge to their egos but as an opportunity to grow and learn. The breakthrough in a conflict between creatives is acknowledging that perhaps you don’t know that you don’t know.
