Knowing what you really need from the mentor is very important because mentors are usually busy and they dont have the time and resources to uncover your needs. If you communicate your needs and what you are looking to learn from your mentor, it makes things easy for them and also helps them in providing specific thoughts and insights that might be helpful to you.

Your potential mentor can be the women that are right now employed in your dream roles (role where you’d like to be 3-5 years down the line) at your dream company. This is the easiest way to identify them.

Be professional. I hate saying this but I have seen first hand how looking for a mentor being a woman can be challenging just by being a woman and the mentor being a man thinking there is something else to it. makes me fume but it's the reality. Be professional both in your presentation and intention.

You can find lots of industry experts on LinkedIn who might be willing to be your mentor. Based on your career goals, you can identify a few potential mentors and reach out to them to see if they would be interested.

I would add that a mentor/mentee relationship needs to be seen as a two-way street. As much as you need to evaluate the fit of a potential mentor, they need to ensure that you are a fit as their mentee. What will you be working toward together? Think outside the box too when considering who they could be. They may not be in your industry but may have a similar career, or may not be in the same function, but they work in the type of organization you want to eventually get into, not all mentors are obvious candidates.

During a career transition, I was seeking mentorship and asked a few women, but I didn't find the right fit. I was used to being the mentor. During my job search, I looked for a company that wanted to support leadership through mentorship. Now, I am lucky to have an advisor with expertise in marketing that I can ask anything. I asked about mentorship during the interview process. And I ask my mentor to meet- Be proactive. Mentors want to see motivated mentees. If your current role doesn't have any mentors available, consider joining a group focused on women in business. Listen for people that may be relevant to form relationships with. And then you can build those relationships until you find someone you can ask to be your mentor.
