Given the scale and depth of impact that AI is likely to have in some industries - like healthcare, hiring, financial access - which impact basic human rights, it is crucial for CXOs and leaders in organizations who are rolling out AI, to be fully aware of these impacts. Are they making informed decisions on what their AI should or should not be doing? If middle-management is making these decisions ("It would be great if we could use AI for this - would save us x% cost operationally"), is the rationale behind these decisions sound? Are signals related to risks traveling both upwards and downwards in the organization?

There is a gap in early-engagement with regulators, human rights advocates, and policymakers on regulations that might have just started taking shape. To start, AI Developers and the leaders & CXOs who are rolling out AI, have the responsibility to seek guidance on existing and imminent legal and regulatory requirements around their use cases. And they should cast a wide-net for such guidance: AI and industry experts, lawyers, diversity and human rights thinkers, and most importantly, the voice of their customer whose rights will be impacted.

In a recent initiative, I brought AI developers, human rights advocates, and policymakers together for an open dialogue on ethical AI. We started with a roundtable, where each group shared their perspectives and concerns, helping to bridge knowledge gaps. To sustain collaboration, we formed a working group that met regularly to discuss case studies and emerging issues. By building common ground on shared values—such as transparency and accountability—we were able to align on practical guidelines for responsible AI. Creating these structured, ongoing conversations fostered trust and a proactive approach to ethical AI development.

I think it is important that we spread awareness about these initiatives across industries and take the time to breakdown some of the technical jargon to cultivate greater comprehension.
