How can visual effects artists manage their workload during production?

Planning is the key point for delivering any Visual Effects projects. This work comes majorly with unrealistic deadlines and high expectations so if you are not planning it well it is surely going to be a mess. You must make a plan and stuck to it.

Spend as much time procrastinating as possible. Fiddle around on YouTube, catch up on emails, make coffee. Do anything besides the prep work required. Take naps. Then, when the deadline is approaching and you realise you've wasted your precious prep time, allow that terror to envelop you and unlock your raw survival instinct. Then, in the throes of do or die panic, slap it all together in one mad burn at the eleventh hour. Repeat until dead.

Planning is everything, especially when it comes to using real-time solutions. Being deterministic is key to getting the best out of those solutions. We have so many clients who don't do this as they think Unreal is an offline renderer or a magical tool but forget every tool needs an approach and Unreal, if you have a strategy, is amazing to have in your corner. Obey those Real-time rules and there is nothing you can't do!

The premise of this question shows a deferential bias toward clients and downloads responsibility for their poor planning into the workers. Clients that are indecisive and cheap are often awarded added value in the unpaid overtime and extra admin work from their suppliers. My advice to VFX artists is this: get a contract, ask for a realistic fee and schedule and be prepared to walk if you don’t get it. They won’t pay you the true value of your work unless you force them to. The industry is top heavy and the pressure of sustaining corporate profits is being downloaded onto workers. So get a contract, and when they demand you exceed it, don’t. Let their project fail because it’s their fault, not yours.

El trabajo de VFX no es de otra manera que en equipo. Y el equipo lo forma tambien el cliente. Siempre trato de involucrar al cliente con sus responsabilidades. Tiene que entender el flujo de trabajo igual que cada miembro del equipo, tiene que comprometerse con fechas de entrega de materiales, fechas de aprobacion, solidez en los pedidos, y por supuesto en los pagos. ....List all activities you need to get done. Make it descriptive / verbose. If you've ever made an SOP document, you know this, if not, read an SOP document to see how tasks are broken down. ....Mark tasks where you need collaboration. Put names of people against each task so you know who to turn to in a crunch. ....Prioritize. Anything that has a major impact downline...do it first, so you don't hold up the production. ....Know your capacity. Don't take on more than you can do to be a 'team player'. This very thing can bring your team down. ...Communicate well, clearly, and regularly and proactively. Even if its a brief update, do it, don't leave it for later. ...Focus on the task, not on the people

Understanding the brief is half the battle won. Most projects go askew because people 'think' they know what is needed. ASK, ASK and ASK again. When in doubt ASK, don't assume. Creative work is subjective and the only way to achieve the end result that is someone elses vision, is to keep talking / discussing and sharing. Do this regularly and proactively. Discuss plans well in advance, before you put them into play. Backtracking and damage control are 2 things you have to try and avoid. It's OK to not know everything. It's not OK to 'wing' it. Go with the flow is good for software tools, not so for production pipelines.

Communication is crucial. Regularly checking in with the production team and understanding the project's timeline and requirements can help in planning and allocating resources effectively.

Naming convention is very important for VFX artists. This keeps your work organized and very easy to trace files and links when there’s a need for any form of trouble shooting.

La cuestion es respetar la biblia, que tambien es dinamica en funcion de los problemas que se van presentando. Fundamentalmente el team tiene que reconocer sus falencias, asi hay una base de conocimiento comun sin malentendidos, persiguiendo la eficiencia.

The work culture in the VFX industry is toxic, and after reading five questions about how the artists can find new ways to work harder and more efficiently I feel this last one about wellbeing to be pathetic. Crunch time happens, but if it’s always crunch time then something is wrong at the top. If the work conditions in your job are so stressful that you need extended breaks to recharge, the job is the problem. We’re not ER doctors here, we’re just making movies. I’m not going to change corporate culture with a LinkedIn post. The decision makers will keep squeezing productions and protecting their profit margins. People are the most important thing. Take care of your crews.

In my experience, a balanced workload can't always be achieved with production schedules/timelines. You'll be pushed to create the highest level of work in the shortest amount of time. It's important when you find yourself on a project with high expectations and short deadlines to plan for how you will recharge when the project is complete. Giving yourself rest when you have downtime or slower projects is the best way I've found to to get re-excited for the work and find balance again.

Production should work to maintain a schedule that reflects reality, is balanced and achievable, ensuring work flows to other artists and departments, and to final delivery.
