Some of the best professional development I received and provided was informal. I remember going to a conference that I wasn't getting much out of, and soon, I found myself in the hotel restaurant working on some things. The next thing I knew, a group of us was sharing ideas, materials, and best practices. Free professional development is creating those opportunities to share what you are doing with others. I left that conference more excited to incorporate new things, none of which were from the breakout sessions.

I think the better question is: Why is this the teacher's responsibility? It's in everyone's interests for teachers to have fully funded PD opportunities provided for them by caring and forward thinking employers who value the work that they do and who understand the value of empowering your people with new knowledge. What a thoroughly offensive question.

I am a big fan of using student perception of teaching tools to source evidence of learning opportunities which then become the focus of my efforts.

Develop a habit of reading and practicing what one reads. There is so much happening in the education world around the world, try to keep oneself abreast with those by attending webinars and workshops that are free. Don’t just look at receiving certificates of attendance, but value the learning that you get from these workshops and webinars. This has helped me a lot and I’m sure others will benefit as well.
