Involving kids in the design of the task and the feedback they are seeking from their audiences is a step towards developing student agency. Decades ago when these ideas came forward, school boards started to make the shift. Unfortunately, standardization models seemed to contradict and we fell back into old ways. Empowering kids and teachers IS the real purpose of education and designing pathways, feedback routines and cycles of improvement do lead towards better results for all, including standardized assessment tools. Not one or the other, both drive outcomes and learners forward.
