How can teacher mentoring be integrated into professional development?

The mentoring process is the crux of Teacher grooming. Not just with the subject knowledge but also with soft skills on handling students of different background & age groups. These learnings can become a enriching ride for novice teachers with quality mentors in place.

I ahve found mentoring one of the most inspiring and distinctive characteristics of the teaching profession. MAs a teacher, we are not competing for bonuses we are here to help one another grow. We work collaboratively, and mentoring is essential. One of my mentors helped guide me in my math lessons. It was instrumental in helping me understand how to teach math.

Being a Teacher in digital world and particularly in the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world is really a challenge. The expectation from a teacher to remain an ideal human being and also prepare the children to face the new world order puts added pressure on him. If the teacher happens to be a contractual teacher or an employee of private school the exploitation he/ she has to face is immense. Under these circumstances a teacher needs to be supported continuously by encouraging him to navigate his profession, hone his skills in teaching and help him manage his class / children. He must find a friend, philosopher and guide in his mentor who can be his colleague, senior teacher, instructional head or the Principal.

Teacher Mentoring is highly critical, as the impact is deep in terms of no of lives impacted as well as duration of the impact. One well groomed teacher can uplift 100s of careers & lives. For institutions, this can also help create an ecosystem of feedback & continuous improvisation.

Teacher mentoring opens the gateway to numerous possibilities, including new teachers learning effective strategies—or what I like to call "tips and tricks." Teaching a classroom full of kids can be a whirlwind experience for a new educator, so the more strategies they learn early on, the better prepared they'll be.

Teachers in mentoring partnerships are also required to complete a Reflection activity on the content of the workshops and their experience in the mentoring process to demonstrate how they can apply it to their teaching practice.

Launching a Teacher Mentoring Program should at least take care of the following points: 1 .Forming a dedicated leadership team & Allocating budget and secure resources. 2. Establishing a clear timeline and action plan. 3. Communicating program goals and expectations. 4. Provide continuous support and development. Apart from the above, monitoring progress through regular data analysis can make the program impact more strong.

One aspect I am always considerate about is establishing the right context. I make sure to understand Mentee's perspective on how s/he goes about teaching and what reference point s/he is speaking from. This helps me to devise my approach accordingly thereby also making sure that the Mentee can vouch for some workable carrybacks given the Mentor Mentee relationship.

While mentoring can be an ideal means of growth for educators, it’s important to consider the culture and climate of your schools aspirational identity. Ask yourself: do you have the right people in place to mentor and build educators for the culture and climate you desire, not the one you have? Mentoring can be a great means of shifting culture if we remove it from mere compliance.
