How can System Architecture professionals stay current with new technologies?

Take online courses and get certified. Attend industry events and network. Read tech blogs, journals, and news. Join online communities for discussions. Participate in webinars and webcasts. Collaborate with peers and share knowledge. Experiment with hands-on projects and labs. Stay curious and follow tech trends. These steps ensure you're always learning and adapting to new technologies in a rapidly evolving field.

Read blogs and newsletters... Wait! What happened to books?!? I find that books do a better job of teaching technical concepts than blogs or newsletters. They have the space to get deeper into the topics providing better context, and hopefully have been proof-read to ensure they are understandable. I do acknowledge that they can go out of date if the authors tie themselves to budding technologies that do not survive, but I appreciate the thought that goes into books. Sure, a good blog post is fantastic, but those often go out of date quicker than books. I'm not really interested in news letters. At least books and blogs provide examples. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words!

Reading blogs and newsletters is in my case usually the beginning of the drill for the topic. If there will be something what catch my attention in the headers I’ll try to dig deeper within the topic. So as a beginning of the road it is a great start. It is also important to look for a new sources from time to time not always long standing proven blogs keep bringing all best topics

By regularly reading these blogs and newsletters, System Architecture professionals can stay informed about the latest technologies, trends, and best practices in the industry, helping them make informed decisions and drive innovation in their projects. Attending Conferences and Meetups: Participating in technology conferences, workshops, and meetups allows professionals to network with industry leaders, learn about the latest developments, and gain practical knowledge about cutting-edge technologies. Taking Courses and Certifications: Engaging in continuous learning through relevant courses and certifications can enhance System Architecture skills and keep professionals updated on the latest technological advancements.

- Take self-initiatives to stay updated on the latest trends on different topics. - Undertake a course complete it and get certified by the authority. - Read blogs, watch videos and go through the latest news daily. - Maintain a knowledge base on Microsoft Word, Google Docs that you can refer to anytime.

Another option which demand in my opinion a little more curation. What I mean is that video is sometimes better and sometimes worse than a written word. Source and validity if the source is another topic but is valid for all methods of personal development- you have to be careful because everybody can publish everything which doesn’t mean its valid.

Make a habit of noting down key points at the time of watching a video or listening to a podcast. These key points will help you formulate a knowledge base of your own. This knowledge base in turn will help you in solving problems in future. Keep adding unique problems, errors, technical issues, etc. that you encounter on a daily basis in the knowledge base.

This is one of my favourite and most effective way. Meeting people with the same interests/problems and possibly face to face make whole process more efficient. It takes discussion to different levels much faster no mention that usually you can have multiple people within one table having discussion about the topic. This gives also another opportunity which is as much important. You can share with others your knowledge as well not only look for solutions for your questions. Exchange of experience within networking/community groups is allowing to move it further on digital level but it is natural for us to get faster and easier on when we have met somebody in person and we can “mimic” their physical reactions to chat exchange.

System architecture professionals can network with other professionals in the field through various methods. Join professional associations or organizations related to system architecture, such as the IEEE Computer Society or the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These organizations often host events, conferences, and provide opportunities for networking. Engage in social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and LinkedIn groups. Connect with peers, mentors, and potential employers, and participate in discussions and share valuable content. Join local user groups or meetups for system architecture professionals, where you can network with other professionals in your area and learn from their experiences.

Networking is one of the undermined skills for an SA. Assume networking as a thumb rule and make a strong network in your professional community. A healthy network facilitates healthy discussions and healthy discussions result in the sharing of knowledge that is beneficial for both parties.

Certificates are a great path, and courses that lead to certificates can be helpful steps. Certificates are fantastic because they orient the student to the most important common body of knowledge concerning the technology. Certificates provide a tangible goal that helps with motivation, and if they involve expense all the better. It's one thing to not pass a certificate, it's another to waste a couple hundred dollars!

Build your own projects! This is my favorite way of learning. I always have several extra-vocational projects competing for time, and I cycle through them based on my level of interest. Because I work on the thing that motivates me at the time, I have a better attitude and reach deeper for the effort to improve. I pick tools that I want to learn. Most important, I use ChatGPT and Bard to get oriented and provide boilerplate. I often ask both as a poor man's consensus mechanism, haha.

Work backwards from the customer to identify what trends are relevant. You might think a particular technology A is very important and start diving deep on it but it’s possible in reality, that’s not the case. After you identified the trend, look for what industry leaders and field practitioners are saying about it - consume blog/videos they did. From there adjust accordingly based on your learning style - read further, do hands on, discuss in a community etc.

From my experience, the key to become a better system architecture (SA) professional is understanding the customer and market needs. As an SA professional it is important to follow technology and architecture trends and learn from them. The way to keep up-to date is 1. Read - go through blogs of technology, white-papers, attend events etc. 2. Experiment - Just reading is not sufficient, while you learn these try to experiment with small POCs. Take a use-case from your company or your own idea and do a POC or try experimenting. 3. Repeat- To become better at Systems Architecture repeat the above steps constantly and consistently.
