Since structural engineering codes has completely different function/scope(structural safety and durable safe behavior) I can see one relation where codes can encoureg and advocate using light weight structures versus heavy ones, specially in huge span projects, that alone will have dramatic impacts in all aspects concerning sustainability.

This question assumes that we engineers are operating under codes that somehow limit or affect sustainability. Yet they are two completely separate elements. Each is controlled by a different set of principals and not necessarily interrelated. Structural engineering codes protect the life & safety of the public. Sustainability can be considered within any of those codes. There’s little to no restriction on using sustainable materials, construction methods, or building sustainable structures within any structural engineering standard. Just be in the mindset of sustainability when designing a structure under the engineering codes.

As I learnt from the latest standard EN 15978 the life-cycle assessment of project is defined with certain modular boundaries. This gives the opportunity to assess in comparable manners the way you execute the assessment itself. Said that a huge part of the carbon reduction for example comes from the embodied carbon impacts (craddle to gate) which is regulated from the LCA according to the EN 15804. Hence ideally if the design standards and code would be revised according to these sustainabiltiy ones, it would be already a good way to update them. #admaiorasemper
