Strategic thinking is about the Three Big Questions: Where are we now? Where do we want to go? And how will we get there? It is about creating a map, or a game plan, where the business can direct its steps, while being able to adapt when the terrain (or a competitor) changes. You are trying to create a fit between the business's resources and the opportunities in your context. You become aware of future issues and problems in advance, which enables you to open more doors, and capture opportunities, acting proactively rather than reactively. Customers will be happier in the long term, employees will be more motivated by a future-directed approach, you will have an improved public image, you can prevent mis-steps, and mitigate risk.

I’ve always suggested/encouraged my team to work on a business plan. Why a business plan? It helped them create a path they can follow and keep track of their performance. It can also help to change course if needed. Business plan should be reviewed and monitored against goals. Share it with your manager and mentor. Keep track of your successes and opportunities.

Most of us were not taught strategic planning at school. We might have had a goal or two, but no clear vision and the documented plan to get there. The best thing for our career is to create a solid strategic plan that starts by questioning ourselves: Where am I now at work? Where do I want to be? How will that affect me at home (and have I got the right support in place)? What do I value most in work and in life? What is the current gap between where I am and where I want to be? What will help me bridge that gap? (More clarity? Other people or networks? Study/skills? Self belief/personal development?) When you identify these (& more) prioritise them, and set goal dates. This strategic plan will move you closer to your desired goal.
