1 What is the STAR model?

The STAR model is a simple framework that helps you organize your thoughts and present them clearly. It consists of four elements: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. The Situation is the context or background of the problem or challenge you faced. The Task is the goal or objective you had to achieve or the question you had to answer. The Action is the specific steps or strategies you took to complete the task or solve the problem. The Result is the outcome or impact of your action, including what you learned or what you would do differently next time.

When it comes to frameworks, the STAR model is probably one I have heard about the most. Applications of the model are ideal in circumstances where you may be asked competency questions, like an interview, for example. Generally, when you are telling a story describing a time in the past, the STAR structure can be a good guideline for keeping the narrative concise and on track. In practice, a person using this tool may look to place more emphasis on certain parts, particularly the 'Action' and 'Result' elements. People may also prefer to use a modified version being the STARR model, which incorporates 'Reflection' as an additional point to address. This is something I personally prefer to use, time permitting.

Finally, you should review the result by comparing it to your expected outcome, analyzing the feedback, and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of your action.

Using the STAR model can also present some challenges. You must provide relevant and accurate details and evidence to avoid oversimplifying or exaggerating the situation or the result. Additionally, being biased or subjective in your action or your result should be avoided by considering alternative perspectives and viewpoints. Additionally, setting SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals and steps is important to avoid being too vague or too specific in your task or your action. Lastly, adapting to changing circumstances and feedback is necessary to avoid being too rigid or too flexible in your action or your result.

I agree with the fact that STAR can present challenges when and if the quality of the information provided is not clear enough and answers are based on the rigid structure of the model without contemplating other models to assist the analysis.
