Short-term orientation is a great way to cement learning and innovate. Suppose you’ve just read an article and found yourself agreeing with a principle. Over the next 7 days look for an example in your work/life where that principle can be applied and experiment with doing so. Chances are your first implementation of something truly new will be flawed and make you feel uncomfortable, but successful application is where the value lies. So learn from that first implementation and in the next 7 days look for another opportunity and experiment again. Without short-term orientation it’s too easy to nod at the principle and simultaneously continue doing what is familiar. With intentional repeated short-term orientation we can transform.

We create psychological safety for those who report up through us by being transparent about our own failures and being upfront that our strategy for success includes failure. It’s best when this can be done with concrete examples and by being seen to own both failures and successes as they occur. I’ve yet to see a failure that couldn’t be learned from and that’s a skill that can be taught much more easily when we’ve removed the stigma from both the word and experience.
