Poor packaging and labeling which exposes food to damage, spoilage, or contamination, inadequate temperature and humidity control which affects food quality and safety, lack of coordination and communication between different actors in the supply chain resulting in overproduction, overstocking, or mismatched demand and supply, insufficient infrastructure and logistics causing delays, losses, or inefficiencies in food delivery, and unfavorable market conditions or policies discouraging food donation, redistribution, or recovery are some of the common causes of food waste in shipping and receiving.

Cold chain management and monitoring can ensure optimal temperature and humidity conditions for food preservation and safety throughout transportation and storage. Digital technologies and platforms can enable real-time data collection, analysis, and sharing among supply chain partners. This also facilitates demand forecasting, inventory management, and order fulfillment. Improving infrastructure and logistics can enhance food accessibility, availability, and affordability while reducing transportation time, cost, and emissions. Finally, market and policy incentives should be promoted to encourage food donation, redistribution, or recovery in order to support food waste reduction initiatives and innovations.

Controlling food waste starts with monitoring each process in the supply chain and identifying where the loss is happening. This can be done by conducting an audit that measures and tracks the amount of food waste and in which place it is occurring. From there, inventory management can be improved, and distribution and transport solutions developed, with the help of automation tools.

Food waste costs money, harms the environment, and worsens hunger. Reducing food waste can save resources, create new markets, improve food security, lower emissions, and prevent illnesses. It needs actions from all food chain actors and consumers. The UN goal is to halve food waste by 2030.

Pay close attention to the regulatory and biosecurity requirements of the destination (and any transit points) Even shipping between states of a country may have restrictions. Being able to recieve from a country is no gaurentee you can send to it under the same conditions. A shipment that fails either regulatory or biosecurity requirements will rapidly become a difficult business problem. Have meaningful contingency plans for rerouting or secure/verified destruction. Ensure you have proper insurance.
