How can recruiters support each other and build a strong team?

In the world of recruitment, I've personally experienced two environments: Share & Grow together, or Everyone for themselves. Build the first, trust me. Building a robust team starts with fostering camaraderie among recruiters. Encouraging mutual support creates an environment where collaboration thrives. By sharing insights, strategies, and resources, recruiters uplift one another, fostering a collective strength that propels the entire team forward. It's not just about individual success; it's about lifting each other to achieve greater heights together. When recruiters unite, supporting and learning from one another, they forge a formidable team that exceeds expectations and achieves remarkable outcomes.

Recruiters often face challenges in a competitive and crowded market, contending with deadlines, high expectations and at times bad reputation for the profession. Establishing feedback and promoting knowledge sharing within the team and extending these practices to the broader recruitment community can contribute to setting a standardised way of working. It facilitates peer to peer reviews, exchange of ideas, sharing success stories, and addressing challenges. Encouraging the exploration of innovative approaches for growth, leveraging market trends, and embracing technological advancements. This collaborative effort will create a unified framework, fostering a more professional and effective approach within the recruitment industry.

Sharing your experience, knowledge, and past experiences are very helpful to fellow recruiters. Setting regular meetings to discuss market trends, strategies, and brainstorming will help enhance efficiency from each recruiter.

Most of the Recruiters I've known in my career didn't study Recruiting in college, or anywhere. Many of us literally fell in to the role/career. It's incredibly helpful to share best practices, processes, ideologies and self-gained knowledge. There are many books on the subject but a lot of people don't read them. I read at least one new book on recruiting per year, just to stay current and try to glean some new tactic or technique to incorporate into my repertoire.

Recruiters can foster a strong team by: -Sharing best practices, insights, and resources. -Offering assistance, advice, and mentoring. -Maintaining open lines for feedback and idea-sharing. -Allocating responsibilities based on strengths and bandwidth. -Acknowledging achievements and milestones together.

When you're new to a team, recruiting can feel like a leap of faith. It's a unique blend of learned skills, the ability to assess behavior, and relying on intuition. Intuition, however, requires bravery and openness. Celebrating those instances when someone trusts their instincts and makes an exceptional talent match is a fantastic way to generate momentum. By prioritizing the development of a talent-matching culture instead of merely filling positions, the team experiences a ripple effect of benefits, including higher retention rates, increased employee engagement, better quality referrals, and happier recruiters.

Celebrating achievements, both big and small, is a powerful tool for team building. Recognising success not only boosts morale but also reinforces a sense of accomplishment. This positive reinforcement creates a culture where staff feel valued and motivated to contribute. Regular team celebrations and recognition creates confidence, trust and strengthens the bond between team members. While it is essential to recognise achievements, it is equally crucial to avoid an overemphasis on the negatives. Setbacks are inevitable, over focusing on shortcomings can result in low morale and productivity. Rather a balanced approach and perspective can foster an environment of empowerment, lessons learnt, improvement and growth.

Recruiting can feel like a trust fall when you're new to a team because it's 30% learned skill, 30% behavioral assessment ability, and 40% intuition. The tricky bit about intuition is that it requires courage and vulnerability. Celebrating when someone makes a legendary talent match because they trusted their gut is a great way to build momentum. When your team takes the time to build a culture of talent-matching rather than job-filling, you'll see excellent ripple effects like retention, employee engagement, quality referrals... and happy recruiters!

There are so many highs and lows in our industry, it's a really important skill to learn how to stay level-headed. We work with the most uncontrollable "product" there is, humans! Celebrating the wins is so important, not just for yourself but for your team. Promoting an environment where everyone is winning only helps to attract more business overall. If someone is struggling, offer some help and when they finally close that deal be the first one to congratulate them, they won't forget it.

I don’t think anyone offers an MBA in Recruiting, we learn from each other and that's why knowledge sharing is our holy grail. Brown bag lunches, mentoring, and tapping each other's expertise – that's how we sharpen our skills. Learning never stops. Conferences, seminars, and swapping stories with industry colleagues helps by sharing fresh ideas and best practices. When workloads get lopsided, we step in, ensuring no one gets buried. And when someone's drowning, we throw them a lifebuoy, not just watch them sink. Quality of life matters, and we're all in this together. We celebrate each other's victories and major life milestones, because in a team, everyone wins.

Seeking and offering feedback and advice is fundamental for team success. Here's why: First, soliciting feedback is a game-changer. It's not just about introspection; it's about evolution. Knowing where you excel and where you falter is crucial. You can't fix what you don't know is broken. And here's the kicker: offering advice isn’t just generosity, it's leadership. Diversity within the recruitment team itself is a powerful asset. Recruiting professionals from various backgrounds, with different perspectives and experiences, contributes to a more robust and innovative team dynamic. Encouraging an environment where team members celebrate their differences and learn from one another fosters a sense of unity that transcends geographical boundaries. We work with clients in the Middle East, embracing and valuing diversity extends beyond mere cultural understanding. It involves acknowledging the unique lifestyle values prevalent in the region. Recognising the importance of family, traditions, and the significance of personal relationships in the Middle East becomes integral to effective client engagement.

Dans mon équipe, la diversité des origines était totale, mais surtout la différence d'age entre le consultant senior et les charges de recherche, parfois très jeune, était frappante. It's important to allow time to get to know each other and enjoy each other's company. Half of my team are remote, so every other week we've got a "virtual pub" where people can dip in and out, have a chat, bring a drink and unwind. It's a great way to socialise in the comfort of your own home.

This is my favorite (and often overlooked) way to build a strong team. Yes, sharing feedback and knowledge, supporting personal development, and bringing diverse conversation are all important to support each other but celebrating and socializing with your team is imperative!

We've all seen the amazingly hilarious recruiter memes/gifs - when you see one that makes you giggle, send it out to all of your recruiter friends! We all know that in recruiting, the good days are beautiful and the bad days can weigh on us pretty heavily. Keep that in mind and message your recruiter friends often. It doesn't always have to be business-related - maybe you just thought of them and wanted to say, "How are you today?". You never know how that simple five-second gesture can turn someone's day around!

Competitive recruiters can benefit from each other by exchanging feedback on companies and candidates. With this and other trust-building methods, competitive recruiters can foster a positive and collaborative relationship between them without sharing their precious candidates and clients. For example, creating a WhatsApp group to communicate and share information with your competitors is a great way to do so.

We would have “blitz sessions” where we will all give a hand working on a challenging position together. The goal id to put our brains together to find talents in places we hadn’t looked. At times, to make these sessions funner we would put music and bring candy and treats. It’s a great way to end the week on a Friday.

?? Know your numbers! It's important to have the backing of leadership when supporting each other. ?? By having a solid grasp of your team's results and the return on investment (ROI) they're generating, and by sharing those metrics, you can best showcase the value your team brings. This is the key to gaining the support from leadership that will elevate the entire team. ???? When your successes are celebrated and your struggles are supported from the top, it becomes much easier to foster a supportive environment where everyone can thrive together. ????

Shadowing, I think, is paramount to developing your skills as a recruiter. Allowing teammates to listen in on your calls (or you listen in on theirs) provides the opportunity to catch things in real time and offer advice in a debrief session immediately following. It works both ways...Find someone who can recruit with their eyes closed and ask to shadow their calls, come up with questions and comments to chat about after. Or have them shadow your calls and ask for their constructive criticism.

Recruiters belonging to the same industry, region and geography etc. could come together and collaborate to build a common candidate talent pool that can benefit the recruiter and candidates. This could be a closed network of candidates and recruiters from a particular industry or region created on LinkedIn or WhatsApp where everyone can share openings. While there is a flipside to this idea but if moderated effectively, this could work in everyone's benefit.
