A central question which often gets missed in defining research goals is addressing what decisions will be made based on the results of your research. Defining these “decision criteria” are an early way to conduct useful, actionable research and aligning stakeholders on the business value of the study. During this phase, it is also recommended to identify stakeholders for whom the results will be most relevant, as prioritization of research questions may vary by stakeholder.

2 Choose your research methods

The second step is to choose your research methods based on your research goals, data sources, and resources. There are many types of quantitative research methods, such as surveys, experiments, analytics, and A/B testing. Each method has its own strengths, limitations, and applications. More often than not, research hypotheses apply to only a sub section of the users, and it is essential to identify this segmentation early and lay out study selection criteria appropriately.

Validity refers to how well your data measures what it intends to measure, while reliability looks at its consistency and repeatability. To improve your data collection, you need to consider aspects such as sampling, measurement, and ethics.
