How can Product Managers excel in mentorship programs?

Mentoring, as in any other discipline holds significant value for Product Managers. The mentorship engagement thrives when mentees exhibit a clear understanding of their objectives and when mentors possess a definitive grasp of their roles and responsibilities. Establishing expectations from the onset of the mentorship results in a conducive environment for both parties to engage meaningfully. Mentorship is a two way street, wherein mentees acquire novel skills and essential guidance, while mentors glean fresh perspectives and insights. For a successful mentorship, it's critical for both parties to approach mentorship with equal fervor and dedication, articulating their objectives right from the beginning.

Every professional can greatly benefit from having a mentor. I recently started offering mentorship services to product management professionals for any question on the product management, leadership and career growth - and it has been an extremely insightful for both them and myself. For the mentees it's a great opportunity to ask any question, when you feel stuck, but don't know where to begin. For the mentor (myself in this case) - to learn from hearing challenges others have, and seek actionable advises based on my current and previous experience.

Mentorship varies depending on the mentee's level of maturity: beginner, intermediate, and professional. - For beginners, it is crucial to lead by example and accelerate their learning curve by sharing your experiences. - For those at an intermediate level, the focus shifts towards answering their questions. This involves proactive listening and restraining the urge to provide immediate answers. Instead, encourage mentees to find solutions independently, fostering their growth and development. - For professionals, mentorship resembles more of a dynamic dialogue where roles as mentor and mentee can interchange several times within a single session. This learning environment enriches both parties, often with the mentor gaining new insights

In mentorship, clarity is the seed of success. Articulate not just what you want to learn, but also what you wish to contribute. This dual-focused approach ensures a mutualistic relationship where growth is bidirectional.

This is the most important step in the process and I generally encourage people to take time. The best mentors I have had are generally few levels above you or are leaders I would love to work with/for. The reason for that deliberate choice is to accelerate the learning as well as have an opportunity to have candid conversation. More often than not a lot of good mentors re-direct you to someone they believe have a spike in a skill you want to explore.

When I was a group product manager at Verizon. I had 6 mentors they are Directors and VP levels. Most of them were at the headquarters in NJ. But I was at Boston, MA. Each time when I visit the headquarters, I always proactively reach out to my mentors ahead of time and schedule meetings with multiple mentors on the same trip. So that I can optimize my trip and outcomes of the meeting.

With my previous mentors I was always prepared to ask questions with scenarios or examples of things I was struggling with. Being prepared or sending the questions ahead of the meeting helped the sessions go smoothly and we had enough time to discuss in detail.

Most mentors are generally not in the direct chain of command and can hence give objective advice. Adapt to their style of mentorship eg, some give examples for you to draw signals, some will talk about frameworks etc. (keep a lookout for that & ask explicitly about their style)

Continuará existindo a incerteza, as decis?es top-down, os corner cases. O erro sempre deve ser motivo para aprendizado, para manter o time motivado e engajado de que toda a a??o visa o bem do negócio, mesmo quando ela n?o é t?o bem sucedida quanto o esperado.

In both my mentoring and coaching practices, I have found that the crucial element for achieving success is taking action. No amount of self-awareness, planning, or strategy can be effective if the client is not a self-starter or willing to become one.

Mentorship isn’t as hard as it sounds tbh. To be mentored and to mentor in the end is sharing experiences that you have had (or someone who is ahead of you has had) to ensure you can learn from their lessons before committing the same errors. You‘ll often find that many of the situations your younger mentees are facing, you have mastered. Likewise it will be for your mentors. They will have experienced many of challenges you are facing and guide you with their advice to successfully overcome the current challenges.
