How can the private sector be involved in effective outreach and coalition building?

Community organizers must first clearly understand what the goals, motivations and potential concerns of private-sector partners are. Once they do, they can get the private sector more involved by clearly communicating the benefits of participation. Many businesses want to improve their public image and standing in the community, so organizers could emphasize how supporting civic initiatives and partnering with community groups provides positive publicity and goodwill. Overall, community organizers need to show the private sector that active involvement in community building is not just altruistic but also makes strategic sense for creating a more robust local economy and customer base over the long term.

Identify the incentives. Why would a private organization or entity want to work with your community? What incentive do they have? Do quick research, identify which goals align and your own strengths. Increase effectiveness and build trust with shared goals and incentives ??

The private sector can be more effective in outreach by building relationships with local organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and local job search organizations. They could also sponsor memberships in campus organizations by paying memberships fees and sponsoring some activities of the campus organizations.

Generally, actors in the private sector understand that they have a stake in the peace, security and wellbeing of the communities where they operate. So aligning their actions accordingly is generally not a difficult task. They want to appear to be demonstrating a sense of responsibility as well. So, if you have enough experience with stakeholder engagement, you should have no difficulty winning their interest to begin a partnership discussion.

By turning excess stock and perishable capacity into digital tokens that reward collective action activities, businesses can earn brownie points that support communities to get organised.

To help build trust with impacted communities, requires you to see community members as the experts of their own experiences --- trust that they are not only aware of the problems but have ideas about how to fix them -- they just lack the resources

So, obviously beyond identifying the objectives and values that your initiative represents, there is also the need to show that you can be trusted by the decision-makers driving the activities of the private sector enterprise. This is where accountability and transparency come in. It is important for the enterprise to perceive you as contributing to transparent and accountable practices. One of the easiest ways to demonstrate your trustworthiness is to show that your initiative promotes transparency and accountability, and to show how you do so.

Building Trust in a mutually beneficial relationship between corporate entities and community organisers is crucial to achieving social change objectives. In this context, trust is established when businesses exhibit a genuine and purposeful commitment to social change activities that serve the interests of both communities and the enterprise. Trust building requires transparency, accountability, and open communication between both parties. It also involves aligning business goals with social change objectives, which helps to assuage the public's aversion to corporate profit-focused activities. Ultimately, it is an integral part of the social change matrix that promotes empathy and support for business sustainability.

Begin by defining the actions that are of value to the community, such as volunteering one's spare time or other such acts of good citizenship, and then valuing the time spent (invested) in participating in those activities. Publish the results to create a feedback loop which everyone can see the benefit of, and ask businesses to support those activities by turning their perishable stock and idling capacity into a token of value that thanks volunteers for the choices they make. Enable volunteers to purchase their redundant resources (which would otherwise be wasted) using the tokens, creating a win-win for both.

I have found the best examples of collaborative relationships between businesses and communities, are when there are defined roles and responsibilities, that outline how power is shared and will be accountable for and to whom.

Ask the influential voices within the public and private sectors to back the way the community defines and measures the value it creates by working together through co-operative means, so that they're role becomes clear - to back all acts of good citizenship with resources that would otherwise be wasted.

A token of community value that is measurable and understandable, and which can be generated by the community themselves so that it can be used to buy perishable goods and services before the value disappears, will enable the community to identify the good corporate citizens that operate within individual communities.

Turn the elimination of waste into a campaign that the business community can support. Support those organisations that support the community, by buycotting those that don't.

In community development practice experiences, I attest that activating communities' voices more sustainably through participatory approaches empowers and rewards the enterprise with increased community support, innovation, and sustainability. It enables corporate enterprises to engage with local communities meaningfully and sustainably. By involving the community in decision-making processes, the enterprise gains a better understanding of its needs and concerns, which helps it tailor their operations to serve the community better. It leads to increased trust and support from the community, which translates into increased sales and revenue for the enterprise. Furthermore, it leads to more innovative and sustainable solutions.
