It's very important for any R&D to adopt a lean and agile approach, but most especially philanthropic foundations since charities are much more cost-conscious and they need to ensure what they are building meets all their stakeholders needs, with the main one being their customer. Moreover, it's more than well-advised for researchers to have an appetite to learn what tools are out there can help their firm serve their charitable cause. As such, constantly exposing themself to any outlet where they're exposed to more experts and technology - podcasts, summits, demos, etc. - are vital to give R&D inspiration. But ultimately, they need to use design thinking to narrow down which tools ultimately best serves their cause.

Any charity that does not use well-defined metrics to measure their firms work will fail, period. What constitutes well-defined metrics is one that is understandable, transparent, aspirational, and relevant to all the stakeholders to the charitable firm. The metric on it's own cannot work, but it does serve as the bedrock for the data storytelling charitable firms need to unite everyone into their vision and holds workers accountable to all other stakeholders.

I think most nonprofits fall short of effective R&D, mostly, because we’re still telling the old stories, like what it was like for us 20 years ago instead of “today,” when things are shifting so rapidly! It is imperative that today, philanthropy must engage new models, bringing folks together! I call it “happy & scrappy philanthropy,” —It’s when we improvise w our stakeholders we’re serving For example, it’s changing a “blood drive” from feeling like “the library,” into a high-fiving football game, where people shout out to each other “why they donate!” And we serve Yogurtland & Wahoos tacos with our partnered, fun team… It’s “small-town”-Patagonia, tho on steroids, imagining everybody could be happier & more fulfilled And they are today
