How can patient portals help reduce healthcare costs and improve quality of care?

I think, patient portals can play a crucial role in reducing healthcare costs and enhancing the quality of care. By allowing patients to securely access their medical information, schedule appointments, and communicate with healthcare providers, patient portals facilitate efficient and convenient healthcare encounters, reducing the need for unnecessary in-person visits. This not only saves healthcare costs associated with redundant appointments but also promotes patient engagement and self-management, leading to improved adherence to care plans, earlier detection of issues, and better health outcomes.

While such portals enhance patient experience, they also add complexity since each provide have their own portal . That makes the patient to login to multiple portals, remember login and password, ensure their PHI data is secure. What would help is a single patient portal with which providers, payers can seamlessly interact and patient has a say on which information can be accessible by which provider or payer and how long that access is open.

I have personally used patient portal with my physicians and if they are in the same "office" you can use for multiple docs at one entry point. I used for my PCP and my Cardiologist because they are both with corporate umbrella. I think it is great.

Patient portals not only help the patients save time, but also help reduce workload of the front desk staff by allowing patients to view available slots and book appointments on their own, and retrieve their reports. If hospitals are innovative, they can also leverage patient portals to run CDSMPs, thus helping patients avoid unnecessary visits to the clinics.

Patient portals may also be leveraged by "outside" providers to submit referrals directly (and avoid a paper based fax). For example, when I go to see my primary care for neck pain and I get refereed to a physical therapist, it would be so convenient to have my primary directly share my documentation with my preferred PT provider by simply submitting on the patient's behalf (once approvals/permissions are in place of course). As a patient, I simply login to the PT provider portal and request an appointment. My primary care can also login and see my progress.

Including educational content alongside the information presented is a great way to increase health equity.

Love the self-service capabilities, reviewing past visits, making payments, making appointments, preparing for an appointment - you know - all those things you do in every other industry on your phone without evening thinking about it.

As a consumer I agree with the convenience and the fact that do enhance the quality of care I get. At the same time, I do not want my doctor’s time for free. I am willing to pay for their expertise. I want them to be compensated. I feel the value. What does it take to fix this - give consumers convenient and quality care while compensating physician’s and their staff.

In contexts like India, where a patient is visiting multiple providers without any referrals, it helps to rather have a PHR that can pull data from multiple facilities. Since each facility will have its own patient portal, it will be cumbersome for the patient to manage multiple of them, and this will also lead to fragmented records.
