How can observing others help you improve your public speaking skills?

Improving your skills as a public speaker as much a learned skill as it is a practiced one. By observing others you can gain valuable tips (remember imitation is the greatest form of flattery). When observing others speak (publicy) pay attention to their body language, in good speakers, it is usually an open and engaging. Notice their pace, it is never too quick or too slow, it is one in which it constantly draws the audience in. And finally, examine the power of their pause. Pause for effect can be brief or exaggerated, either way, good speakers use pause with purpose. So...(pause) for observe some speakers and be prepared to learn.

When I first began speaking to audiences (40-100) I would attend other speakers presentations to see how they delivered the same material. I was able to gain insights into acoustics, limitations of technology (microphone with a cord, brightness of a projector), and any spots that may be a trip hazard. Walking a room gives you an opportunity to feel out how your audience will see you and how you can interact with them. Watching others allows you to observe their tone, volume, and gestures -- what worked and what didn't. I was attending a conference once and a student asked why I was there since I was able to teach the topics. I replied, "I'm here to see what I can adopt into my presentations." I took back what I liked and worked it in.

Observing others in public speaking is akin to seeing possibilities unfold before you. As they say, "You can't be what you can't see." You can learn tons from observing others, and observing the reactions of their audience. But remember that you are unique! Don‘t try to imitate or copy, rather integrate the things you like and adapt them to your own style.

One of the best ways to observe others is to watch one TED talk a day and see how people tell their stories in the limited amount of time they have. In general, observing how people weave a story into their speech is one of the best ways to observe others.

Pay attention to how they structure their speech and handle questions or interruptions. Reflect on what makes their presentation impactful or what could be improved. Try to watch a diverse range of speakers to broaden your learning.

To analyze others' public speaking, focus on specific aspects: Evaluate their clarity and organization of content, effectiveness in engaging the audience, and use of storytelling or examples. Note their body language, facial expressions, voice modulation, and pacing. Observe how they handle questions and manage speaking anxiety. Reflect on what makes their speech impactful or areas for improvement. Compare different styles and techniques, identifying what resonates with you and can be adapted to your style.

Simply ask. Be ready for the feedback though. Remember you are wanting to grow and the best way to do that is to find out the areas you can improve upon. Seek that feedback, embrace it and then implement the changes needed!

When practising a speech, an absolute gem of a feedback exercise is having people observe a portion, say 5 to 10 minutes, of your speech and have them tell you what went right. It could be pauses, gestures, pace, eye contact, use of the space, choice of words... anything that 'worked' for them. Then, you co-create ways of further exploring and putting more emphasis on those positive elements. Next, you redo those 5 to 10 minutes while experimenting with those enhanced positive characteristics. Chances are you will discover there is much more room for the things that make you and your speech shine that you weren't even aware you had or did in the first place. Oh, and please, have a ball while doing this!

To get feedback on your public speaking, actively seek it from diverse sources. After a speech, ask your audience, colleagues, or mentors for specific input on areas like content clarity, engagement, delivery, and body language. Use surveys or feedback forms for anonymous and honest responses. Join a public speaking group or workshop such as The PSA or Toastmasters where feedback is a key component. Be open to constructive criticism and ask for both strengths and areas for improvement. Utilize this feedback for targeted practice and refinement.

I’ve probably given hundreds of presentations at this point and I still cringe when I have to watch a recording of myself! Now, I will do a voice recording of my presentation several times and observe how I sound (am I clear? Am I talking too fast and/or stumbling over my words?) I find that helpful. If you do decide to do a video recording just know that it will probably never be perfect or even to your liking, and that’s ok! Don’t get distracted with trying to perfect every single detail because we are our own worst critics. Just focus on how you sound and not necessarily how you look. This is just my piece of advice and may not work for everyone. ??

There are so many ways to observe yourself now! You can record yourself on zoom or similar platform, record your voice notes, or even go on Canva to do your presentation with the video in the background. This can be useful to not only see what types of inflection and points you’re getting across, but you can also see your own body language. You can also share with others for feedback so that you won’t have to present the presentation over and over again. Rewatching yourself can also help you memorize what you have to say ???

The best way I've found to observe yourself is to record your rehearsals and your live presentation. Why record rehearsals? Because practice makes permanent, recordings allow you to spot areas that fall short of your goals and can help you to determine how to improve before the shortfalls become habits. Why record the live performance? You will want to see how you perform in the moment. You will want to analyze the recording for ideas how to improve for your next performance. The great news is that it is easy to record yourself with the technology that is readily available.

To observe yourself in public speaking, record your speeches and presentations. Watch the recordings to critique your own performance. Pay attention to your body language, facial expressions, voice clarity, pacing, and audience engagement. Notice any repetitive gestures or filler words. Assess the structure and clarity of your content. Reflect on areas where you feel confident and those needing improvement. This self-assessment helps identify personal strengths and areas for growth in your public speaking skills.

Whilst it great to observe others when speaking and paying attention to what lands with the audience and then incorporating that in your own speaking, it is important to remember that the key is not to imitate others but to just try and be yourself. The best speakers are the ones that are authentic and when they’re speaking you know that they are being themselves completely and aren’t trying to imitate someone else which makes them more endearing and left with wanting to hear more.

If you are observing other speakers in an effort to improve or consider your own approach to speaking, allow yourself to be self-aware. As you watch and listen to a speaker, allow yourself to consciously consider HOW THAT SPEAKER MAKES YOU FEEL. That is important above all else. Use "I" statements rather than statements about the speaker. "I feel engaged!" > "This speaker is engaging." "I feel bored." > "This speaker is boring." "I am learning." > "This speaker is teaching me." Once you've taken stock of how you feel, then determine the root of it. If you feel engaged, consider something the speaker did to engage you. Perhaps they made eye contact with you. Then ask yourself "do I do that?" Repeat as necessary.
