Active listening is a very difficult skill to master but an easy one to say you model on a daily basis. Too often we are just waiting for our chance to speak, contribute or challenge an idea. Active listening requires you to put your self second and make the speaker the priority. Fully focusing your energy on the other person not only is respectful to building your personal relationship with them, but it also allows you to truly hear another perspective. New perspectives are everything! Perspectives allow you to understand people, ideas and problems from multiple angles. You will become a better decision maker, a better consensus builder and trusted partner to those you work with.

Active listening is one of the key skills of great leader/mentor. It enables one to understand perspectives and allows us to process and respond instead of just react. The Team also builds trust over time since they know that mentor is into their discussions and not just pushes his/her thoughts.

An effective leader MUST be a good listener. Team members are often reticent to voice their concerns or dissenting opinions. If you aren't actively listening to the subtext and keying in to morale and mood, you'll never identify the issues or areas where you can improve the dynamic. Your team members WILL let you know where problems lie if you're dialed in. It fosters trust in your leadership and will put you ahead of potential problems where they can be addressed proactively. If you don't understand your mentees' perspective or earn their trust, you'll be the last to know when there's an issue.

When working with your mentor the best way to way with them is to communicate clearly and often. Communication is the key to every relationship especially with your mentor. Your mentor can’t read your mind or help give you any advice or direction if you don’t communicate effectively.

Quite often, the best listeners are also the best observers, picking up on the language spoken between words. Most of our communication is non-verbal and often a "listening ear" is paired with a "trained eye". In my own experience, I have found this to be a great area to focus on developing. As we take more time to listen well to our team, family members, etc., we begin to natively learn how to observe well due to being unoccupied by the demand to say something immediately or hastily. If you prioritize measuring your words well and taking note of what is happening in front of you, the words you do speak will carry their greatest possible weight.

Being a team leader means you speak in a way everyone wants to listen to you, and you want to listen in a way that people love to speak to you. Proper communication creates a safe space where team members do not feel intimidated nor fear to speak up when the time comes. Instead, a leader's actions should inspire their team to do more and become more.

Team leaders should have great humility thence providing freedom to the members to speak up. Creating an environment, always being with the team; will ensure the listening and understanding of the members!

Get to know your team. Your are not there to tell them what to do, rather assist them in being successful. If you are willing to listen to them you will find out how you can assist them and hopefully make them better than you are. If you are afraid that they will fail without you over managing them than you will fail as a leader.

One of the best pieces of advice I received is to listen more than you speak. Sometimes I may go into a meeting having an idea for a solution to an issue or challenge that has come up. If I am willing to listen more than I speak, most of the time the team has solutions that are even better than what I came up with. Take the time to get to know each member of your team individually. Make sure you are for them and they know it. Spend time outside of the office doing fun activities to help the team work better together. There are lots of tools and personality assessments you can utilize to help everyone understand each other and how people can work better together.

Tracking is the major Key to measure your progress. Tracking your progress is a fundamental aspect of personal and professional development. For instance, when my team transitioned to remote work, adapting our communication and workflow was crucial to maintain productivity. Additionally, continuous learning is essential for leadership. Remember, leadership is a journey of both guiding others and self-improvement.

In today's world it is very fast paced and you can get lost in the clutter. Your worst enemy is yourself. If you can learn to manager your mind talk it will help your in your working life as well as your personal life. I also learned that if you have an issue with your boss, coworker, friend or family member and you think about it more than 2 timers you need to address it. Stop caring around the extra baggage and get it off your plate (mind). Remember when you address the issue or issues you better be willing to listen and not just talk.

We had a server in one of our restaurants, she was a leader. She knew how to solve problems. She became a supervisor. She continued to excel. She earned the associate of the month award -- we call it own every moment. She knew food and beverage inside and out, upside and down. Her VP came up with the brilliant idea to have her work in accounting. It's been a god send. She was the leader of the month. Her greatest skills are making great eye contact, her work ethic, but perhaps her listening because she listens, and then solves the challenge. It's amazing how important listening is, because without listening not much else is ever going to happen

There's a difference between listening and active listening. Active listening is a skill. You cannot truly put yourself in someone else's shoes unless you genuinely want to understand the place they are speaking from.
