The goal alignment is super important; however, outlining and designing an individual plan to close skill gaps, assessing a timeline for milestones, implementing measuring tools and so much more goes into this employee talent management task. It is not as simple as learning where the employee sees himself/herself in the company and where those aspirations fit into the business scheme. This retuning event has to be more than annual as people's career goals and expectations shift.
Another important aspect of performance evaluations is to recognize and appreciate the achievements of your employees. This can boost their morale, confidence, and satisfaction, and make them feel valued and respected. You can use various methods to express your gratitude, such as verbal praise, written feedback, bonuses, incentives, or awards. You can also highlight the impact of their work on the organization and the customers, and how they contribute to the overall success. Investments are at risk when we assume all employees (all people) are motivated by the same tools, driven by like meaningfulness, and value aspects of their work talent the same as we do. With the latter, the weight assessed to an effort by the company or a leader is not automatically a premium from the employee's perspective. We must find ways to learn what yields greater desired output from employees.

One additional item to consider are team dynamics. Let's face it, we learn more about our team members as time evolves and as they are faced with challenges. There is fallacy in thinking if we believe good talent will automatically work well with other good talent. This is a critical component of managing people and teams; and it is one that leaders commonly misdiagnosis as an employee relations issue where one employee is deemed an ill-fit. We lose useful talent because we lack insight, management skills, and the right leadership qualities to help our team reach optimal synergy.
Performance evaluations can also be a great way to discuss and plan your employees' career development. You can use this time to explore their interests, aspirations, and potential, and to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. You can also provide them with opportunities and resources to enhance their skills, knowledge, and experience, such as training, mentoring, coaching, or job rotation. This is where leaders have to put on their "big guy" or "big girl" pants--don't ask about your leadership ways if you are not prepared to receive honest feedback.
