1 What is blockchain technology?

Blockchain technology is a system of distributed ledger that records transactions and data in a network of nodes. Each node has a copy of the ledger, which is updated and verified by a consensus mechanism. The ledger consists of blocks, which are linked by cryptographic hashes. Each block contains a timestamp, a reference to the previous block, and a batch of transactions or data. Once a block is added to the ledger, it cannot be altered or deleted, creating a permanent and immutable record.

Given the particular requirements of different use cases, an organization may choose the type of chain and attributes that fit best. 1) Public, permissionless blockchains like Ethereum work well in "trustless" environments where actors do not need to know each other, but instead merely need to verify whether something is true (e.g. sufficient amount of value in a sender's wallet). 2) Private, permissioned blockchains are the opposite end of the spectrum. These tend to be used in high trust environments where players know each other and other attributes of the blockchain are more prioritized, such as immutability. 3) Consortium blockchains work in low trust environments where the actors tend to know each other and want similar outcomes.

2 How does blockchain technology work?

Technically, there are numerous ways the decentralized nodes can come to agreement, or "consensus", such as Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, and Proof of Authority. In any case, consensus mechanisms aim to create a level of challenge or cost that is sufficient to prevent bad actors from easily being able to defraud the network or alter history.

In the same vein as the education challenge, the general purpose technology of blockchain is sometimes conflated with a use case that leverages it (cryptocurrency), which unfortunately allows for inappropriate stigma.
