There is an underlying "tension" between microeconomics and macroeconomics: the former deals with specific actors in the economy (households, companies) and -from an empirical point of view- it benefits from the presence of large datasets, while the latter is focused on "big topics", i.e., aggregate magnitudes (GDP level and growth, inflation, unemployment), but it must rely on much smaller datasets (there are only 4 GDP figures per year!) Macroeconomics tells us about the short term and long term trajectories of countries and regions, thus allowing investors to aptly choose their strategies on the basis of those aggregate fundamentals, and of the likely policies decided by policy makers, i.e., governments and central banks.

To me the most straighforward way to understand why macroeconomics matters in making investment decisions is to consider how the value of a financial asset is estimated: the most generic formula sums up the expected values of all future cash flows (coupons and principal for bonds, dividends for equities) and discounts them by a rate of interest (risk-free + expected inflation + various risk premia). It’s pretty clear that both the numerator and the denominator are strongly influenced by the evolution of the economy, even though with different degrees according to the asset class. Much depends also on the time horizon: it can be very difficult to make short term predictions, so it’s usually better to try to identify long term trends

Business includes the resources that exist within the economy itself, including people, goods, services and other resources. So, if we pay attention to what is happening in the economy in a broad context (macroeconomics), then we can understand what is happening and what might happen in the businesses. But before that, we have to understand the main conditions (macroeconomics earlier).

Thematic trends and the large megatrends that are already impacting the global economy and regional economic clusters are important to return to, in order to detect the opportunities for investment and positioning over time. By researching these trends and the macroeconomic factors that help to explain them and influence them, it is easier to make sense of the way things are changing and why. Immediate data only explained what happened recently, the longer time frame of trends and shifts in policy and geopolitics still must be factored into analysis for investment purposes to win the long game.

It's pretty obvious... a strong economy will attract investment capital... higher yields on economic strength and likely inflation will boost more shorter/medium-term investment as well... to get a good perspective on growth and inflation on a comparative basis is essential... the focus may shift from time to time (money growth was a major theme back in the '80s) but both fiscal and monetary policies of most developed nations play a big part in macroeconomic research...

When it comes to research and analysis reports, I see value in providing key takeaways and an executive summary to get to the point. But otherwise, macroeconomy can be very dry, so data visuals can tell a compelling story.

Communicate impact, which in turn depends on your audience. The findings are interesting only to the extent that they help the recipient solve a problem -- in an investment content, the macroeconomic insight is not enough on its own

While macroeconomic data is valuable for investors, it's not sufficient alone. It lacks micro-level insights, neglects market sentiment, and doesn't pinpoint entry and exit points. Diversification, considering geopolitical events, and understanding global interconnectedness are crucial. A comprehensive strategy should blend macro data with micro factors, market sentiment, and technical analysis for successful investing.

Note that data is only one part of the investing process. One must also have a longer term view and predefined entry and exit points into various investments - dependent on how the variables play out.

Par exemple , si on souhaite réduire les émissions liées aux voitures des particuliers, il faut étudier à l’échelle des projets comment les constructeurs peuvent innover et offrir des biens accessibles et à faible en émissions.

Definitely the macro research is half way to finish a well-looking investment report. Micro research, like valuation metrics of specific companies/sectors (EV/EBITDA,P/E,PEG ratio,P/B,P/sales) can complement the broader picture of where to invest and why. The technical analysis can quickly highlight potential turning points to be aware for entry & exit points, whereas the overall sentiment as measured by the stock market progress and third-party research/rating agency opinions can give extra color to the existing investment thesis.

The history of macroeconomics shows us many things. We as economists can get on a soap box and say things like: Inflation is inevitable, self interest, interconnectedness and specialization (a la, Adam Smith) directs where capital will be deployed, etc. but it isn't the whole picture. Macro data suggests the world will continue to grow and adapt. We will continue to innovate, develop, enhance, and specialize. For the average investor analyzing these trends, investing in equities and enjoying the benefits of inflation on your portfolio, will pay long term dividends for the creation of your wealth.
