Librarians can certainly teach customers not only how to use the library's catalog and databases, but also to better search other outside resources- such as the property appraiser, tax collector, and public records websites. Questions can not only be asked at the service desk- but my library system also offers one-on-one tech help appointments and walk-in sessions that can be used for learning information literacy.

When I create and run programs, there is always some form of information literacy in them. I teach teens and kids how to use technology or do a craft and give them space to discuss these topics and explore the devices/materials themselves. When I run Storytimes, they're engaging and require some level of audience participation. Other programs have crafts based on a book we read together. My goal is to encourage literacy and learning at every age from 0-18 (and beyond).

I think the most important aspect of encouraging lifelong learning for kids is to allow them to learn the way they want and in a relaxed environment. The kids typically come to the library after a long day or week of school and sometimes the idea of going to a class is excruciating. I try to make my programs fun first. Then I try to sneak in some learning. I find this helps them enjoy learning more because they associate this new skill with the fun they had!
