How can joining a professional organization jumpstart your career in Business Networking?

"Your net worth is your network"- You can truly never have enough connections. Joining a professional organization gives you access to not only expanding your network, but also access to tools and resources you may not have had at your disposal before. In an ever changing world, it's important to stay as sharp as possible and having access to different opinions and people who have had different experiences than you have gives you that much more of an edge. "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together"

Investing in your business network in critical for your success. One of the best ways is to join relevant professional networks and truly engage and contribute to your community. As you join these networks remember is not about attending but rather engaging and adding value while building trust and your brand. Remember there is a cycle of maturity in every circle you enter 1- It’s not what you know, its who you know. This is where where you make connections 2- it’s not who you know, it’s who knows you. This guy a where you have build an initial network circle and started to establish a trusted network 3- it’s not who knows you, but rather what are you known for. This is when you establish your brand

Your relationships are your currency. As an entrepreneur, LinkedIn has been a tremendous resource over the past 16 years. I have acquired amazing clients and connections. The keys are to be active and contribute value. Join groups. Repost great content and from influencers. Comment on posts that you can contribute innovative perspectives. If you can, upgrade to Premium, be strategic on who you would like to have virtual coffee with and know what you want from “the ask” before reaching out. If you are a fantastic facilitator/speaker record a short video/s on a specific/relevant topic that users will find helpful. This will also help you build your brand and followers. 2024 awaits! Now is a great time to start!

What I have learned is that despite all of technology that is available business decisions are based on know, like and trust. The key that I have found in joining a business networking organization is to add value to those I meet. It is not about the sale I can make; instead, it's about adding value to them. Example: if a contact is having challenges with employees -and if I came across an article that might benefit them- I would send it to them. People will turn off your message if it's all about you and what you have to sell! Find out about them -determine a wish, want or need and then add value to them!! When I do this- out of the blue referrals come to me that turn into business!

Expanding your network and contacts is important for your future success. And you must network in the right places in order to utilize networking for your professional growth. Who is missing from your contacts? Who do you need to add to your professional contacts list that you can leverage for the future? Where are these people networking? Who do you know that can connect you with the people you are looking to meet? Networking must be strategic. Finding the correct networking groups, events and social gatherings is just as important as meeting new people. Go networking where the people you are trying to connect with are networking. This way you maximize your time and connections.

Before expanding your network— Do a social media and overall brand check up. You first need to know who you are. What does your profile say? Your photo. Bio. Across all platforms. Branding isn’t just for companies. Professionals each have their own story to tell and goals, skills, and expertise to share. In today’s increasingly digital world, a personal brand is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s expected. Leadership comes from how you behave, how you act, and how you inherently interact with people. That story you tell, combined with those everyday interactions, ultimately define your personal brand. That is your power in networking! And remember, relationships are your currency.

Even if you don’t benefit directly from networking, you have at least participated in dynamic process and avoided to permanently answer the question “What if”, as business is a journey rather than final destination

Building your own form of a ‘little black book’ makes you a necessity to any organisation or client. You need to make your network something people want to tap into. Either that be an employer or client

Be very strategic on what organizations you join. Make sure they align with your goals and career aspirations. Organizations require time commitments and are extremely valuable to be apart of when leveraged appropriately. Research. Select 2-3 based on your time. Visit chapter meetings, get to know members, meeting styles, etc. You will not be able to tell by a conference if that is the organization for you. Organizations are excellent ways to give back to your community, build your resume and leadership, and meeting amazing people. Just be mindful of your time, alignment and over committing.

Boost your resume and portfolio by joining a professional organization. Showcase your commitment and professionalism by featuring the organization's name and logo on your resume, website, and social media profiles. Earn certifications, awards, and recognition, emphasizing your skills and expertise. Volunteer, write, speak, or lead projects within the organization to gain valuable experience and exposure, highlighting your leadership and initiative. These credentials and achievements elevate your professional profile, making you stand out in your field.

A key to networking is valuable connections. You need people that can add and multiply your worth. Great ways to do this are through frequent interactions with your network. Support them when they get a new job, new certificate, or post something insightful. Be there for their shining moments so that when you have your’s they are cheering you on! Work on strengthening your network so that it will help you further down the road when and if you need it. Cheer your network on through thick and thin! While there can be many accompanying benefits that a professional organization can potentially bring; be clear about the primary purpose that the organization is trying to achieve such as - business gains - knowledge - charitable causes I was once swayed to join a charity-driven organization with the ‘promise’ of potential business to gain from the many influential members within. Thankfully, I was reminded that the primary purpose of the organization was to do charity work. Even if there could be opportunities to generate business, there shouldn’t be any expectations that this will be a guarantee. If I am looking for potential business opportunities, I should join a professional organization focusing on business generation instead.
