1 Choose renewable and recyclable materials

One of the key aspects of sustainable bicycle design is the selection of materials that are renewable, recyclable, or biodegradable. This reduces the dependence on fossil fuels and non-renewable resources, and also lowers the carbon footprint and waste of the production process. For example, some designers have experimented with bamboo, wood, cardboard, and cork as alternative materials for bicycle frames, wheels, and accessories. These materials are natural, lightweight, durable, and can be easily composted or recycled at the end of their life cycle.

Thus, finding a suitable, ecologically sound material for a bicycle is relatively easy. The trouble comes from designing and selling the idea sustainably. This means having a product that makes economic sense, will be profitable, and is something people want.

Another important factor of sustainable bicycle design is the optimization of the performance and efficiency of the bike. This means designing the bike to suit the specific needs and preferences of the user, such as the terrain, the distance, the speed, and the comfort. By doing so, the bike can reduce the energy consumption and emissions of the user, and also enhance the user experience and satisfaction. For example, some designers have developed smart features, such as sensors, lights, and GPS, that can adjust the bike's settings and functions according to the user's behavior and environment.

This means engaging with the stakeholders, such as the users, the communities, and the manufacturers, to understand their needs, expectations, and preferences, and to co-create solutions that are relevant, accessible, and desirable. By doing so, the bike can foster a sense of identity, belonging, and empowerment among the users, and also promote social inclusion, equity, and diversity. For example, some designers have collaborated with local artisans, NGOs, and schools to create bikes that reflect the local culture, traditions, and skills, and that also serve as tools for education, empowerment, and income generation.

4 Apply circular design principles

A final aspect of sustainable bicycle design is the application of circular design principles to the design process and outcome. This means designing the bike to last longer, to be repaired and maintained easily, to be reused and repurposed creatively, and to be recycled and regenerated effectively. By doing so, the bike can extend its life cycle, reduce its waste and emissions, and create new value and opportunities for the users and the environment. For example, some designers have adopted modular, adaptable, and interchangeable components, that can be customized, upgraded, or replaced according to the user's needs and preferences, and that can also be recycled or composted at the end of their life cycle.

Repairability is an interesting aspect of circular design. It goes hand in hand with modular design, especially when considering bicycles. One solution is to enable the user to easily repair the bicycle itself in a scenario where the user lives in a remote environment, and self-reliance is a matter of survival. Another is to design a bicycle so the user or manufacturer can easily refurbish or upgrade any non-functional part of the bicycle. Perhaps no one wants another subscription, but that is a way to implement circular design in bikes.

Be ready to embrace what the future of sustainable design might mean. As a former Sustainable Design Instructor I feel what the nuts and bolts of sustainable design education might push for in this context, but in many ways too little too late. AI and climate impacting our day to day in a very real immediate tangible way will effect possible answers to this questions in ways that are impossible to anticipate without experience the unforeseeable in-use contexts. Everything has hypothetically been done in a lab somewhere but of all things, what will surface in an immediate and applicable way. Stay open to those possibilities and know the answer may be unknowable.
