The Olympics may be over, but the spirit of international unity and competition is something that can fuel team morale, performance, and engagement in any workplace. When I was working at Purefoods, we used to have the Ayala Olympics. Now in my current employment, we have the annual MVP Olympics, where we include not only regular sports, but talent contests, and even parlor games as well. At Grin Events, we believe that strong teams are built not only in the boardroom but also under the open sky. Our recent outdoor Leisure Games event was a testament to this philosophy. Picture this: a sunny day, a lush green field, and 60 enthusiastic participants ready to engage in friendly competition. The day was designed to strengthen teamwork and boost morale and featured classic Leisure Games such as Cornhole, Bocce Ball, Ladder Ball, and Bucket Ball. Laughter echoed as bags sailed through the air, some landing with precision, while others took unexpected detours. The tension built as teams strategized during Bocce Ball—should they knock opponents’ balls away or aim for a delicate touch? As the day unfolded, we witnessed magic happening as alliances formed and players cheered each other on. Colleagues became teammates and teammates became friends. Conversations flowed freely, barriers dissolved, and trust grew. The competitive banter during games transformed into genuine connections during breaks. We know that team building isn’t just about trust falls and icebreakers. In fact, we think this is the old way of doing things. We believe in Team Connecting, creating shared memories, celebrating victories (even the small ones), and embracing the joy of play. Mix of Formats The calendar features events that happen every week with special one-off events. This gives people a couple reasons to come to the office every week. Love the idea of Pet Holiday featuring Santa and those cinnamon roll Mondays! ? It’s Easy to Notice First things first - it’s in the elevator. Such a smart move! If USC updates this every month (and it looks like they do) chances are everyone sees it and understands that there are regular team events happening at the office. Of course you’d want to have this online as well (and I’m sure they do). ? Lots of treats! Good food is a nice, easy incentive to get people to gather. Things have been stressful for many companies this year. Gathering over a hot mulled wine or cookies is comforting and easy. Sign me up! What to do about a problem called great sporting events? 2024 sees the Euro’s & Olympics being held ?? – both in Europe ??. Euro’s ? in Germany (start this month) & Olympics ?? in France (starts in July) So, no time difference ?????? for games and events really… Meaning that some games / events will be live on TV ?? in works time by and large. Have you left it til now to start to think / talk about this? If so, best to think about your approach for your employees then, right?! For some employers, these events could mean an increase in absence, holiday requests, AWOL and a potential decrease in productivity if employees keep looking at their mobiles ?? or popping into the staff room ?? (if you are playing them on TV screens in the workplace). So, how can you proactively get ahead of any challenges?? ? What about speaking ??????? to your workforce, and involving them in the decisions for the team? Touched on it above, will you provide a TV to allow employees to enjoy watching them in their breaks ?/ lunchbreaks if they so choose? Can you create a rota ??, based on agreement that if it’s quiet, more of the team can take a Euro/Olympic break ? and then either you take the hit (time) or they work the time back, or a mix of both… Some employers (if able to) shut down ? for key events / games, but of course this isn’t an option for everyone… Or (maybe more popular), others bring the workforce together to watch ?? – but again this isn’t always practical… What you can’t do is ignore it and hope it will go away – especially with the UKs rich multi-cultural ????? workforce – even if England don’t do well, other teams will!! But you still have time to plan should a home team make it to the end ?? – like the Euro Final – or 100m Mens Final ?? (or Relay!). Stranger things have happened – right?! And should your absenteeism / AWOL increase, should you not be able to approve all holiday requests, should you see a drop in productivity or if you notice any other impact, having robust systems and processes ????????#???????? in place to deal with such issues is sensible anyway. #euros #olympics #businessowner #hr
