Accessibility is not only a moral and legal obligation, but also a business opportunity and a competitive advantage for FinTech developers. By making their software accessible, they can reach a wider and more diverse market, enhance their reputation and customer loyalty, reduce the risk of lawsuits and complaints, and foster innovation and creativity. According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion people live with some form of disability, and this number is expected to increase as the population ages. Moreover, accessibility benefits not only people with disabilities, but also people with temporary or situational impairments, such as low bandwidth, low battery, or noisy environments.

For example, by making their software accessible, developers can attract more customers who have different abilities and backgrounds, such as people with disabilities, who account for more than one billion people globally, according to the World Health Organization. I have witnessed how accessibility can enhance the user experience for people who have various challenges, such as low vision, dyslexia, or motor difficulties. Accessibility can also assist people who encounter temporary or situational barriers, such as using a device with low battery or low bandwidth. Therefore, I support the idea that accessibility is not only a moral and legal responsibility, but also a business and creative opportunity for FinTech developers.

2 Principles of accessibility

Accessibility is based on four main principles: perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness. These principles are derived from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which provide a set of standards and recommendations for web content and applications. FinTech developers can use these principles as a framework for designing and testing their software for accessibility. Each principle has its own unique purpose and application to FinTech software. For example, perceivability requires information and user interface components to be presented in ways that can be perceived by all users, regardless of their sensory abilities; operability requires user interface components and navigation to be operable by all users, regardless of their input devices or methods; understandability requires information and user interface components to be understandable by all users, regardless of their cognitive abilities or language preferences; and robustness requires content and user interface components to be robust enough to work with current and future technologies and platforms, regardless of their compatibility or accessibility features. FinTech developers should consider these principles when designing their software, such as providing alternative text for images, captions and transcripts for audio and video, clear labels and feedback, simple language, valid code, and testing with different browsers, devices, and assistive technologies.

Perceivability means that I present the information and user interface components in ways that can be perceived by all users. Operability means that I make the user interface components and navigation operable by all users. . Understandability means that I make the information and user interface components understandable by all users. Robustness means that I make the content and user interface components robust enough to work with current and future technologies and platforms.

Accessibility is not a one-time task, but a continuous process that involves planning, designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software products. FinTech developers should adopt best practices of accessibility to ensure their software meets the needs and expectations of all users. Incorporating accessibility from the start is essential, such as defining project requirements, scope, goals and allocating time, budget and resources. Additionally, involving users with disabilities in the software development process can provide valuable feedback. Tools and resources such as WAVE, AXE, NVDA and WebAIM can also help FinTech developers evaluate and improve the accessibility of their software, and to comply with relevant laws and regulations.
