How can Facility Managers save their companies money?

As Facilities Manager we're one of the only employees who can save our employer money. This is done through energy savings, best practices, standardization, inspections, and holding others accountable. This would include a commissioned BMS system with detailed HVAC schedules and setpoints, day lighting, motion sensors, adding renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, enrolling in a quality Energy Demand Response program, UV blocking window film, cleaning chemical standardization with onsite generation, clear tasking and assignment expectations, etc. I've successfully saved more than my annual salary at every school district I've been employed.

As we talk about reducing a factory's energy consumption, one non-traditional idea might be reducing office foot print, which is one practical way of reducing energy consumption. How to do this? By promoting work-from-home or hybrid work method. I believe covid-19 has proven to us that not all staff are actually required to come to office. I believe when more people actually work from their homes, not just the office foot print reduces where subsequently energy consumption shall also drop ( a bit, but still, it's a saving!), traffic jams may be reduced, contributing to global warming reduction, more time with our family which hopefully increases overall happiness etc.

A facility manager can achieve significant cost reductions and enhance sustainability by implementing different strategies like utilizing geothermal heating systems for energy efficiency, incorporating rainwater harvesting for reducing water usage, and using motion sensors to optimize lighting and heating in less frequented areas. Facility upkeep whether it’s client areas/visitors area or facility equipment area both shall be managed efficiently and in top notch condition to keep occupier satisfaction to highest level. It makes job of sales and marketing teams easier to maintain facilities occupancy high and do not loose revenues on vacant spaces. Talent development and growth is another important aspect which saves recruitment and training cost.

If sanitation/EVS/housekeeping/janitorial teams only had to physically clean debris / soiled spaces and not focus on disinfecting surfaces their time on task would be greatly reduced.
