How can an external coach help you develop leadership skills?

External coach can ask questions to stimulate potential thoughts and ideas that were not discovered or considered in the past. The different perspectives can propel a leader to a level they never dreamed of.

I think an external coach has an added benefit, because in getting to know you, they will ask questions that someone internally would not think to ask, assuming they already knew the answers. Addition, external coach can more easily hold up the mirror with honesty and kindness And they do not have any preconceived notions or other interests beyond helping their client become more self-aware, and then, addressing what they learn about themselves be it leveraging their strengths and untapped potential or navigating around some of their gaps. That is not to say that an internal coach cannot be helpful however, an external coach brings in additional perspective without any unintentional biases or specific expectations.

This is where the separation between Coach and Mentor benefits from a touch of gray . . . while some opportunities are more Coach driven and instructional, the relationship strengthens when an External Coach takes a breath, listens as a Mentor, and remembers the ultimate goal is to release the imagination, creativity, and productivity of their client as a Mentee.

More importantly, an external coach serves as your mirror and will help you see any blind spots or internal/external blocks that are getting in your way. They will then help you overcome these blindspots or blocks so you can develop the important skills needed to be a great leader. Mindset being one of those top skills. A coach will be able to listen to the unsaid and pick up on things that are limiting you. They will be able to coach you to build a strong mindset by providing you with a different perspective and a strategy to manage your thoughts. These skills are what will help you as a leader take extreme ownership of yourself and be able to lead by example.
