How can Executive Managers improve their public speaking skills?

What is the goal of the speech? Is this a speech that is forced to be listened to; or listened to out of curiosity/free choice? I think the approach would be slightly different as the “why” for listening would likely be different in my examples above.

In my experience, too often we are focused on what we want to say and not about the audience and what they want to hear. Try anticipating questions the audience wants answered or do a small survey in advance to understand the top things on people’s minds. Then think about your agenda and how it compares. Bottom line is avoid only focusing inward and you’ll connect better with your teams.

Speak in public. Often. Try to resist speaking on topics you aren’t at least “somewhat elite” in either research, application, or practical knowledge. Bonus: build in interaction with the audience. “Raise your hand if….” - this makes the audience feel like you are tailoring to them, and it chews up time that otherwise would force you to have more original, thought provoking content. Also, remember that every 90 seconds you have lost everyone in the room. You need a new hook, engagement moment, etc to reel them back in. That’s the state of attention we live in these days.

Someone with a well-planned speech can then outline it on a blank piece of paper because they know the components of it. Memorizing the whole speech is often overkill, but memorizing the outline is a great way to stay on track and drive confidence. Someone who knows the outline inside and out can quickly get back on track if/when they fumble.

Preparation of the speech means to have a very clear understanding of exactly what you wish your audience to walk away with, what is the key message that you want to deliver. The whole presentation shall only have not more than 3 key messages so all the other days and points are just expansion of the key points. This really helps to prepare the speech so there is no need to memorize and look at details of the slide when one present, things can go with the flow once the key message is clear.

Eine Rede oder auch ein Vortrag darf auch dem Publikum die M?glichkeit des aktiven Zuh?rend, Denkens und wenngleich nur in den stillen Dialog zu treten, erm?glichen.

I always start with a key points and the exact things I want folks to take away from the talk. Once I have two of these or three MAX in bullet points, I craft the rest of the presentation in order to maximize the impact of those points. I also try to find images that will add impact to those key points. It’s very important to reduce the amount of texr that is appearing behind you on screen as folks can only focus on one thing at a time, and I want that to be my voice. So, just knowing that there are only three things that I want them to remember allows me to stay focused when crafting the rest.

In agree and would add too often I’ve experienced speakers who like to speak from the heart with no preparation which leads to multiple topics and not a clear path for the audience to follow. Practice and share your speech with some trusted individuals that will give you honest feedback. Highlight key points and ensure those messages were received and make sure you have a good summary that connects the dots.

One of the best hacks I ever figured out for practicing, was recording it on zoom, so that I could watch it back. The simple act of hitting record kicks in all the exact same nerves that I would experience if I was speaking publicly. Instantly, I have the same experience as I would with another person, but on my schedule and when I’m available to do it.

Nerves are real it doesn’t matter how much practice you have, you never know in the moment how you’re going to feel when you pick up the microphone. The most important thing for me is to focus on my breathing. Deep, slow breaths through my nose, calms my central nervous system, and allows me to get into the moment. Also, opening the presentation with some gratitude, allows me to engage with the audience and relax before I get into the core content. The key is to know yourself and know what’s going to show up in the worst case scenario with your nerves. Lean into those nerves acknowledge that they’re there and talk back to them letting them know that you feel them, it’s OK but you’re gonna put it aside for a moment and do your thing!

I'm not a psychologist, but the idea of exposure therapy where people are exposed to things that make them nervous to calm their nerves makes a lot of sense. One thing that I've seen work is to do improv or standup comedy to improve public speaking skills. These are exaggerated forms of public speaking which are arguably much harder than talking about something within one's realm of expertise. After bombing at standup, a speech on something you know well is much less intimidating.

Menschen m?chten keine Fakten h?ren, die lediglich "richtig" sind. Wenn ich einen Vortrag zum Thema 2+2 = 4 halte, dann wird dies niemanden begeistern oder überraschen. Wenn ich Menschen in Bewegung bringen m?chte, dann muss ich sie tats?chlich bewegen, d.h. überraschen, emotional berühren und faszinieren. Dafür gibt es unterschiedliche M?glichkeiten. Das Ziel ist jedoch, dass die Zuh?rerin / der Zuh?rer den Vortrag nach dem Vortrag anders verl?sst als er oder sie hereingekommen ist.

Engaging your audience? Think carefully. Don't be afraid to welcome them at the start and tell them how YOU would like to proceed: I will take questions at the end, or I will happily take questions. If you have a question please put a hand up and I will answer you - thankyou... The topic and the required objective is clearly the driver here.

Recording your speeches and then reviewing them is quite helpful. You can set your phone near you (out of view) and record yourself as you speak for feedback. It’s difficult in the beginning: you’ll feel awkward and wish you did things differently. Over time, the results show up as you practice and gain more confidence. Consider sending the recording to friends or even putting it on social media to engage feedback. You’ll learn a lot from candid feedback and will get better from it.

Watching film is one of the best ways to get better at anything, be it sports or public speaking. For those who have an executive coach, watching film with this person can add another dimension to get more out of the review of the speech.

Aus meiner Erfahrung m?chte ich gerne noch einen Aspekt erg?nzen: Die Arbeit beginnt mit der Arbeit an sich selbst. Je besser ich mich selbst kenne. Je intensiver ich mich mit mir auseinandergesetzt habe. Je besser ich meine Werte und Haltungen kenne, mich in diesen "zu Hause" und wohl in meiner Haut fühle, desto besser (= stimmiger) wird meine Rede werden. Denn mein Erfolg, meine Glaubwürdigkeit als Redner, wird vom Publikum anhand der Stimmigkeit erlebt. Stimmig = Kongruenz von innen und au?en. Dafür muss ich mein Innen kennen, dann kann ich dies ideal nach au?en transportieren.

Stand still or move around? How will the room be set out. Where will the important people be sitting? Managing a room is as important as managing your content. Will you be using a mike? hand held on a string or wireless. What happens when you move too close to a speaker? How will you handle the unexpected? Be prepared to talk to someone who has been trained and fallen at every hurdle along the way. Be prepared to laugh at yourself to protect others. Keep one or two get out phrases in your bag for such an occasion. You might be the centre of attention for five minutes but you are not that important.

as manager you should also focus on providing opportunities to speak to your employees. we need to develop the speakers of tomorrow and give them opportunities to speak and grow
