How can early-career professionals identify their transferable skills?

An easy way to identify one of your top transferable skills is to ask a trusted colleague what they think your 'superpower' is. You can ask in a more formal manner- simply ask them what type of projects they would be most apt to seek your help in.

I've been in finance for more than a decade in multiple roles. The thing that helps me to adapt to new roles is continuously developing my set of skills (both hard and soft). Some will take more time to improve than others depending on your attributes but it is important to be self-aware, especially of what you lack. Try to take on as many challenges early in your career as you can. You are going to fail many times on your way to success, there's no avoiding it. But your failures will be more sympathetic and less impactful early rather than late in your career path.

Having pivoted from ESG lawyer to social impact consultant, I have gone through the journey of identifying the transferable skillsets. The strategy that helped me to sail through were: 1. Practice self awareness to identify your value proposition. What is that you really enjoy and have a natural inclination of doing. 2. Seek 360 degree review and feedback from your peers and managers to identify your strengths and weakness and transferable skill sets

Transferable skills are the capabilities, know-how and strengths that you have acquired and can reapply regardless of industry, company or business context. In my experience, these can sometimes prove tricky to identify for yourself in the early stages of your career, and others around you can often see more clearly what your transferable skills are. As a career marketer, I always used to define my skills in functional terms until a very astute coach reframed my perspective by suggesting to me that I was actually “a great change agent who happened to be a marketer”! Of course you will have functionally oriented skills, but also pays to think more laterally about your skill set.

Transferable skills by definition work across domains hence they are usually soft skills like speaking, writing, negotiation, analysis, synthesis, resourcefulness, collaboration, critical thinking etc. Look out for the occasions when you are recognized or rewarded at work for any of these. That’s a good place to start.

To start with- clearly understand what are transferable skills then create a list of such skills. Now consider your current job role and your everyday duties. Categorise your tasks (considering the skill required to complete that task) and match it to the skills in the list. By the end of this exercise, you would have the list of transferable skills that you possess and use in your job. Can repeat it for all the roles you have had so far.

List everything you do in one day. Be very specific such as wrote a 500 word abstract, explained a technique to a colleague etc. Then take the list and think of larger terms that describe this. 500 word abstract: distilling information, written communication, teaching, explaining, stakeholder communication Explaining technique: teaching, mentoring, sharing expertise, health and safety, laboratory management, managing, conveying complex ideas Use job descriptions in adverts to find those bigger terms

The best and least expensive way to identify your transferrable skills is to: 1. List 20 accomplishments you have done that you: A. Enjoyed doing, B. Are proud of having done, C. Think you did it as well as or better than others. No one's opinion counts but yours. From that list 2. Write down all the specific skills you used to complete each accomplishment. (So, 20 skill lists) 3. Compare your 20 skill lists and set aside the 6-8 that appear most often. Those are your top transferrable skills. Those things that transfer to doing a task, whatever the circumstances, situation, environment, or whoever assigned the task to you. Those things that make you feel joy, pride, and confidence.

Think about all the strong skills you already have. Then see what skills are needed for the role interesting for you. Brainstorm how those skills that you have, can be actually useful for the new role. It might be about soft skills, but not only. Dive deeper into your experience and understand how powerful it is.

Take the time to look around. See what skills the people around you have, especially those of your friends and family in different career fields. That can give you an idea of what skills are being valued across the board, and give you a chance to identify your strengths and areas where you need to improve. Consider the things that nearly every job needs, both hard and soft skills - each of which transfer in different ways and at different rates. Talk to your mentors (find one if you haven't got one already) and see if their experiences differ from your observations.

Hybrid skills combine elements of both hard and soft skills, representing a blend of technical expertise and interpersonal abilities. These skills are increasingly valued in today's dynamic work environments, where cross-functional collaboration and innovation are essential. Examples of hybrid skills include: Data-driven decision-making Strategic thinking Creative problem-solving Cross-cultural communication Critical thinking and analytical reasoning When highlighting hybrid skills, emphasize your ability to integrate technical proficiency with interpersonal effectiveness to achieve strategic objectives. Showcase examples where you've leveraged both hard and soft skills to drive innovation, improve processes, or solve complex problems.

Skills which you can carry with you and impact the culture of team , group or company and sustain for a long time. Hard skills will keep changing but your leadership’s skills will remain their and as definition says it can impact at any industry wherever you go. Things which impact culture of people is very important for example people should share feedback with positive notes, people build things in right way, people try fast and fail fast.

To categorize your transferable skills, start by identifying skills from various aspects of your life. Then, group them into categories such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, adaptability, and time management. Prioritize skills relevant to your goals. Finally, provide examples of each skill in action to showcase your proficiency.

One thing I've found helpful is to maintain a portfolio of your work. You can request client testimonials to support your transferable skills. You can sign up for a stretch assignment at work or volunteer within a nonprofit organization or employee resource group to showcase your skills.

Optimize your LinkedIn profile to include transferable skills in your headline, summary, and skills section. During job interviews, prepare stories that showcase your transferable skills in action, emphasizing problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability. Consider creating a portfolio or compiling work samples that demonstrate your proficiency in these areas. Networking events and informational interviews provide opportunities to verbally showcase your transferable skills and build connections. Lastly, continue to seek opportunities for skill development and stay proactive in updating your professional presence to reflect your evolving skillset.

You can showcase your transferable skills on your resume and cover letter. ?? On your resume, you can use the summary section or the work experience section to showcase what you achieved using those skills. ?? The cover letter is one place you can show your interest and enthusiasm for the job while highlighting you're transferable skills. ?? Once you are shortlisted for the interview, you can talk about those skills using examples / anecdotes.

Here's how to do it: 1. Tailored Resume and LinkedIn Profile: Customize these documents for the role you're applying to by highlighting relevant transferable skills in your summary, experience, and skills sections. 2. Quantify Achievements: Where possible, quantify your achievements with these skills. For example, "Increased sales by 20% through strategic communication and teamwork," demonstrates the impact of your soft skills in a measurable way. 3. Leverage ChatGPT for Articulation: ChatGPT can assist in refining how you describe your experiences and skills. By providing detailed descriptions of your work, volunteer experiences, or projects, ChatGPT can help craft compelling narratives.

The whole discussion of transferable skills should be linked to the question of peak performance: when you are operating at your best, what exactly is going on in the environment around you to make you soar? Answering this question is the first step to setting the goal of what your own personal success looks like and how the match between your success and the best environment for you to succeed in connect. Once this is clear, toss aside your CV/resume and write your own bio based on above. Once written, go back and review your bio, circling the key words which actively describe you and what you offer. And just like that - you’ve created your list of transferable skills.

Another way to expand and improve your transferable skills is to ask your current employer for assignments that build upon those particular skills, or volunteer for another organization.

Not all transferable skills come from employment. A great thing to remember is that voluntary opportunities and personal interests can also factor in how you develop your skills. It’s not where they came from, it’s what can you do with it!

There has been a shift in the last couple of years towards Skills First recruiting led by the OECD, LinkedIn and others. Stats from LinkedIn show that this is helping to improve access to new opportunities for all and levelling up the playing field, which is as it should be. While skills are definitely a key part of the future, however, they are used most effectively when in service of a clear purpose. If you haven't found a clear purpose for your career yet (beyond money), keep looking. Finding it will bring a significant extra dimension and motivation to your work and life. It also provides a potentially life long lens through which you can make effective career choices as opportunities arise. Happy searching!

Those are likely to be areas when your transferable skills shine.
