How can Direct Sales leaders create a culture of employee engagement?

To foster employee engagement a sales leader must first earn trust. Trust is earned by open, transparent communications, generating an environment of consistent inclusion, and showing a genuine desire to understand your employee's perspectives; where your corresponding actions take those perspectives and needs into account whenever, and wherever possible.

The communication of the vision is essential for proper alignment. As Simon Sinek portrays in 'Start with Why,' we should always explain the 'why' before the 'how' and the 'what.' This way, we also encourage autonomy and innovation. A good practice for aligning the vision, values, goals, and expectations is to establish a Team or Company Playbook. In this Playbook, the concerned collective should always be able to find inspiration, purpose, and answers to their questions about the conditions, expectations, and requirements the company has for them. The Playbook should be transparent, clear, objective and accessible to everyone, and, of course, its information should be always transmitted to the new people when joining the company.

Direct Sales leaders can foster a culture of employee engagement by prioritizing open communication, recognizing achievements, and offering continuous learning opportunities. By regularly seeking feedback and involving team members in decision-making processes, leaders show that every voice matters. Celebrating both individual and team successes not only boosts morale but also reinforces a sense of belonging. This is an awesome example of a sales leader but another thing vital in the beginning is making sure you’re team knows that this is a safe environment, a learning environment and that mistakes will be made but forgiven. While goals and values are important you want to remember to still seem human, show some fault because that gives them the chance to be the best at something you’re not so good at. Make sure they know they have meaning. That’s all key before you can talk about any type of goals or any values on your vision….its not about you.

This is also a very good idea but if you let them create their own success then the gift is in the knowledge of teaching them how to make money. I can’t tell you how many of my employees have thanked me for mentorship. I get that incentives and all of that works in a lot and most scenarios but my store is #1 in almost all categories and it’s not because we reward each other with incentives or bonus’. Maybe a lunch but it’s never an incentive, it’s just who I am. I teach a hard lesson in “If you do it yourself no one can take it from you, that’s something you know for life.”

I love this. This is how I live and I believe in it whole heartedly. Just remember though that even though training is important and what will make you money. Don’t forget the heart needs to also thrive in order to pump blood to the brain healthily. That means don’t always be training every second, give your team some down time to self-reflect, goof off a little, joke around, sales stories, then from there get back into training. You wanna be human, as a leader you want to make sure you’re authoritative but also sincere and have humility.

You have to look for a way to make the team bond, either by giving regular group activities, outdoor activities e.t.c. Whatever it is make sure it something that they would all engage in and making them realize a failure from one member is a group failure. The more bonded team members are, the more the success of the team.
