I use Logic Pro midi window to let students visualise tones. I play and record the melody they sing through midi, and I let them know that these are tones that their voice should produce as well. They sing looking at the midi window, trying to draw the same picture with their voice. This way tones are less of an abstract subject, imagination kicks in and they can tell the difference between high and low tones.

Vocalists are not allowed to use digital notation in the examination room so for use music teachers and vocal coaches sight reading is mostly done the old-fashioned way and we work with our kids using techniques for improving sight reading. Students who use digital notation find it limiting when having to use printed notation and usually wind up damaging their ability to sight-read a piece of music.

I work in professional theatre as a musical director. Many of the actors I have had the pleasure of working with, both "older" and recently trained, come with some understanding of standard notation. A tool I provide, and seems to be well appreciated, is a video of the vocal score (in standard notation) being played with the actor's notes highlighted and a cursor that follows the music. This requires the appropriate scoring/playback software as well the ability to do a video/audio recording of the playback in the software.
