Let's also focus on the positive impact of assessment: -You can assess to give students evidence of success (which greatly improves motivation). -You can (micro) assess during the lesson to keep the pace and make sure students are tracking. -You can give assessment criteria during lessons so that students are not surprised at assessments and know that the lessons have meaning / value.

Consider "translated assessment". Assess using a different format than you used to teach. A parrot can copy sounds, A photocopier can copy text and pictures, A monkey can copy movements. If you like to assess on paper, teach with visuals and actions. If you want to assess actions, teach with words (spoken and written). If you want to assess speaking, use visuals and written words. Then, you can be open with your assessment and know they've thought through what they demonstrate. There's no need for tricks.
